What new photo of Andrew, Epstein and Mandelson tells us about their first encounters ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

The first photo of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Peter Mandelson spending time with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has been unearthed.

The former prince, now 66, and former US ambassador, 72, are pictured barefoot and wearing bathrobes with wet hair next to a fully dressed Epstein.

This paper has not been able to verify where the photo was taken, but ITV News, which found the image in the Epstein archives, reports it to have been taken at Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. This is a location Epstein has been understood to have visited according to emails seen by The i Paper.

The clothing and appearance of both Mandelson and Epstein is identical to another photo previously unearthed among the Epstein files.

Mandelson with wet hair, barefoot and in a bathrobe can be seen talking to Epstein, wearing a navy t-shirt and beige trousers with dry hair, which matches the length in the new image.

It appears to be a photo of the exact same location but taken at a different angle and without the former prince visible. The pair are sat on the same style of chair at the same size table with identical legs. They are also sat in front of a building with the same distinctive shingle in front of it, on the identical decking.

The covered barbeque also appears to be visible in both photos, as does an item of clothing that appears to be dark coloured T-shirt.

A photo included in the released Epstein ‘birthday book’ shows Peter Mandelson and Jeffrey Epstein. Provider: US House Oversight Committee

The photo of Mandelson and Epstein was published by the House Oversight Committee and was found in a “birthday book” made to celebrate Epstein’s 50th birthday – a milestone birthday the paedophile celebrated in January 2003.

This means the photo was taken at some point before that date. Epstein was first imprisoned for sex crimes in 2008 for soliciting prostitution from a minor.

The weather at the time the image was taken appears to have been warm. Mountbatten-Windsor and Mandelson appear to be sat comfortably while having wet hair and being dressed in bathrobes outdoors, with Epstein in a short-sleeved shirt. The other image of just Mandelson and Epstein shows flowers in bloom, trees in leaf and the sun shining.

If the images were taken in Martha’s Vineyard, this would suggest the images were likely taken in the area’s warm summer months. The hanging basket of flowers also suggests the images were taken in summer. Spring and autumn months in the area are usually milder, but still temperate.

The new photo – which shows the three men sat around a wooden table, outdoors, with mugs bedecked in the American flag – suggests they have likely socialised as a trio as far back as 2002 – more than 24 years.

Files disclosed by the UK Government this week revealing elements of how Mandelson was vetted for the role of US ambassador state that the politician had first been in contact with Epstein that year – 2002.

Prince Andrew was reportedly first in contact with Epstein in 1999.

It is not known when the three men first met or began to spend time together socially, but a scanned photo thought to be of Prince Andrew and Mandelson together was in Jeffrey Epstein’s possession in July 2013.

In emails seen by this paper sent in 2013, an assistant working for Epstein sent correspondence to Mandelson with the subject line “Photograph from Jeffrey Epstein” and a scanned photo attached.

The same email was sent to another man, with the message that the photo was of “pa, peter and [a third name that has been redacted]”. It appears, given the same scanned document was emailed to Mandelson, that he is the “peter” mentioned, while “pa” is an abbreviation used repeatedly in the emails by Epstein and his associates to refer to the former Prince Andrew.

The photo, so far, is not thought to have been uncovered.

Other emails seen by this paper show that Epstein was regularly in contact with Mandelson and Andrew regarding financial and business matters, including the late financier suggesting he may look to hire Mandelson and the then-Prince as Epstein decides “how to gear up my advisory business”.

King Charles’s brother was arrested last month by Thames Valley Police over allegations that he passed sensitive information to Epstein while serving as UK trade envoy.

Files relating to the appointment of Mandelson as US ambassador, from which he resigned earlier this year after his links with Epstein came under scrutiny, were released this week. He was arrested by police in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

The two men have both been released under investigation and deny any wrong-doing.

The images and emails are part of more than three million documents and images released by the US Department of Justice. The files are difficult to search through because they are mostly unlabelled and have been uploaded without a clear structure or timeline, requiring reporters to delve through them manually.
