Blackhawks Well Represented on Craig Button’s New Top 50 Prospect Rankings ...Middle East

On Friday morning, TSN’s Craig Button dropped his updated ranking list of the top 50 affiliated prospects in the NHL. And the Blackhawks are very well represented again.

I’m always interested in Button’s assessment because his rankings (pre- and post-draft) are always different from many other prospect writers/analysts/draft experts. Part of the reason I pay specific attention to Button’s opinions and perspective is because he’s worked in multiple front offices around the NHL, starting with the Minnesota North Stars and then serving as the general manager of the Calgary Flames beginning in 2000.

There’s a noticeable shift in where prospects are playing on Button’s updated list. Five of the top 11 are currently playing in the NCAA, with just one in the AHL.

In Button’s rankings, the Blackhawks have two prospects in the top ten overall. Anton Frondell is No. 2 on the list and Roman Kantserov is No. 10 overall. He also ranks Václav Nestrašil at No. 26. Frondell (SHL) and Kantserov (KHL) are the top two prospects on his list playing overseas.

Here’s what Button said about Frondell specifically:

“Frondell understands what is required to try and get on the right side of any situation in the game,” said Button. “With the puck, without the puck, defensively and offensively, penalty kill, power play.

“He just gets it front to back and everywhere in between, and he’s competitive. When I watch Anton play, I see so much of Sasha Barkov’s game.”

Interestingly, Button does not include Marek Vanacker or Jack Pridham — the top two goal scorers in the OHL at the moment — in his top 50.
