A round of severe weather swept across parts of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana on Tuesday evening, causing significant damage, leaving more than 10,000 people in the dark and prompting an emergency declaration in one hard-hit area.
An unspecified number of buildings were damaged as storms rolled through, multiple roads were closed and schools schools announced closures for Wednesday.
In Kankakee County, significant damage prompted county officials to activate its Emergency Operations Center and file an emergency declaration with the state of Illinois. Sheriff’s officials said emergency personnel continued to perform search and rescue as well as damage assessments in the affected area, which included Sun River Terrace, St. Anne, Kankakee and Aroma Park.
No injuries or deaths had been reported there, officials said.
In Aroma Park, a home’s roof was partially ripped off, its walls collapsed and furniture was tossed about. The nearby city of Kankakee said both it and the county had been “hit severely” and urged residents to avoid all roadways south of city limits and heading into Aroma Park.
According to city officials, Route 45/52 was closed from River Road to Exit 308 of Interstate 57 due to downed power lines, storm damage and fires, authorities said.
Elsewhere in the county, “extensive damage” occurred at Bishop McNamara Catholic School on the border of Kankakee and Bradley, with the district making the decision to close schools on Wednesday. Kankakee Community College also announced its Riverfront Campus and MITC will be closed to allow staff to assess after the storm.
Damage extended across the Indiana state line, where authorities said multiple homes were destroyed.
Newton County Sheriff Shannon Cothran and Rob Churchill, the chief of the Lake Township Fire Department, posted a Facebook video from the community of Lake Village, where significant damage occurred.
“We have multiple homes destroyed, Lake Village took a direct hit, so please stay away from the area,” Churchill said.
North Newton Junior High School was open for anyone displaced by the tornado, and bus transportation was being arranged for affected residents.
Storms delivered wind gusts and golf-ball sized hail as they slammed the region Tuesday evening. According to NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologists, the severe weather threat was expected to continue through the night.
