PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The Pittsford Village Board is considering a ban on bicycles, e-bikes, e-scooters, and other similar vehicles on sidewalks. The proposed law aims to enhance pedestrian safety by aligning with New York state law, which restricts these vehicles on sidewalks unless municipalities decide otherwise.
“There’s been a proliferation of e-bikes and e-scooters, which can go 20 plus miles per hour. When they slam into a pedestrian when they’re walking the sidewalk, it’s not pretty,” said David Wilkes, a Pittsford Village Board Trustee and lifelong bicyclist.
Wilkes explained that the local law would help residents understand recent changes to state law. “The state has said they don’t really want them on sidewalks unless the municipality specifically says that they want to do through that. Personally, data says it’s not very safe,” he said.
Matthew Brown, a village resident, expressed support for the proposal. “I’d say I’m generally in favor. I think that the idea of managing traffic on sidewalks in a highly dense area with a lot of pedestrians, is just a commonsense move,” said Brown.
Brown, who bikes with his daughter Sylvia throughout the village, emphasized the need for better infrastructure. “From a municipal perspective, like being able to create a safe space for pedestrians and cyclists at the same time, it really works well,” he said.
Wilkes also called for improved bike lanes, stating, “If NYSDOT is listening, we would love to have bike lanes. We have, two, actually three state highways crisscrossing our village. And we would love to have additional funding to help us to build those proper bike lanes.”
The proposed law includes an exception for children and teenagers under 16 years old. Enforcement would involve the Department of Public Works, code enforcement officers, traffic enforcement officers, and local residents, Wilke says.
The Village Board plans to hold another public hearing on the matter soon, though no date has been set.
