ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Five local nonprofits have joined forces to form the Greater Rochester Cancer Alliance, aiming to enhance support services for cancer patients and their families in the region. This collaboration was announced earlier today on Alexander Street.

Cancer care is advancing, and more people are living longer after a diagnosis. According to new data from the American Cancer Society, around 70% of cancer patients survive at least five years after diagnosis. The cancer mortality rate has also dropped 34% since its peak in 1991, thanks to advances like immunotherapy, precision medicine, and new drugs.

As more people live with cancer, the need for support services continues to grow. The Greater Rochester Cancer Alliance brings together five local organizations: Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Club Rochester, 13thirty Cancer Connect, CURE Childhood Cancer Association, Camp Good Days, and the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge Rochester.

Together, they provide a unified platform where patients can find programs, resources, and support in one place. Dr. Susan Dent of the Wilmot Cancer Institute, which treats more than 45,000 patients a year, emphasized the importance of this partnership.

“This partnership, I think is so important. Not only do we need to work together as a group or community, but we really need to sort of bring everyone under the same umbrella so that we have access to all these resources together,” Dr. Dent said.

Amanda Miller, who lost a parent to cancer, joined Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Club Rochester about a year ago as the Director of Programs & Support Services… Today she shared her personal experience. “My dad passed away of cancer. We went through two different rounds of it. Unfortunately, he was one of those people that ended up with a blood cancer from his treatments in the first round. But I feel like I can come here and I can hope to give back and give hope, provide the things that my dad never would have taken advantage of,” Miller said.

The alliance is more than a year in the making. Its goal is also to help providers better understand local community resources so they can connect families to support faster and avoid duplicating services.
