Storm timing: When severe weather could hit Chicago area and where tornadoes could form ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

The entire Chicago area is under a threat of severe weather Tuesday, and the stormy conditions could come just in time for the afternoon rush hour commute and even linger through Wednesday morning.

“Its dry as we start the day,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said early Tuesday. “Dry all the way through the early afternoon hours. It’s not until after 4 p.m. that we start to see some clusters of showers and storms.”

As the severe weather looms, here’s what to expect and when.

Storm timeline

Ahead of the storms, Tuesday will be a mostly cloudy day, Roman said, with a wide temperature range. To the north, readings will be in the 40s, with 70s to the south.

“Kankakee could get very close to 80 degrees,” Roman said. “Some areas will warm up, some areas will cool down.”

Storms are expected to move in beginning around 4 p.m., Roman said.

By 7 p.m. or 8 p.m., a line of showers and storms that could produce severe weather will last through the evening and into overnight. Counties to the north at that time will be under a “slight” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level two of five.

Those areas can expect to see heavy downpours, 60 mph winds, large hail and the chance for flooding, Roman said.

Strong storms are expected to continue through 9 p.m. especially through Ottawa, south of I-80 and in northwest Indiana. Areas south of I-80 will see an “enhanced” risk of severe weather, Roman said, which ranks as level three of five.

In those parts, “all weather hazards will be at play,” Roman said.

“Golf ball-sized hail, heavy rain, winds up to 70 miles per hour,” Roman said. “Even some tornadoes could be possible going into the evening hours.”

The enhanced threat will continue further south and into central Illinois, a map from the NWS showed.

“The threat for tornadoes, including strong tornadoes, will be along a warm front tomorrow evening,” the NWS said during a Facebook Live Monday.

The tornado threat should be close to and south of I-80,” the NWS detailed on social media. “The rule of thumb we’re telling folks for this one is check what it feels like outside at about 6 or 7 PM. If it feels like summer, you’re in the threat zone for tornadoes. If it’s chilly, the threat zone should be south of you.”

Steady rain and gusty winds are expected to continue into the evening and overnight, Roman said, coming to an end by mid-morning. By Wednesday afternoon, a cold front passing through will drop temperatures even more, Roman said, with some light snow showers to wrap up the day.
