Building Toward NFL’s Free Agency Frenzy, Packers and Cowboys Trade Again, Tua Tanked, and Other Bears Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Day 49 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Today is one of those “big cup of coffee” days for me. And it might be two at the rate that I’m drinking this morning.

The NFL’s free agency frenzy won’t open its doors until 11 a.m. CT on Monday, but that hasn’t stopped the Bears from being busy. On Sunday, the team reportedly agreed to terms on a new deal with Daniel Hardy, a reserve defensive end and top special team contributor. And earlier on Monday, the team was set to keep linebacker D’Marco Jackson on a two-year deal. Even though Chicago’s football team might not land the big fish as it has in previous offseasons, there is still plenty of work to do at the start of this transactional period. Depending on how things shake out along the defensive line, I wonder if Hardy’s deal will lead to him getting more playing time as a defensive lineman. The 27-year-old played more snaps on special teams in 2025 (355) than he has on defense during his three years as a pro (126). Hardy has made some splash plays in preseason games. Perhaps the exhibition season will provide an avenue to get more regular-season playing time in 2026.

As for Jackson, I think his return puts the linebacker in a position to be a Week 1 starter when the 2026 season kicks off. The Bears defense didn’t seem to miss a beat when Jackson was installed as a starter in place of Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards, who were out with injuries that led Chicago to turn to Jackson in the first place. Jackson’s emergence in 2025 after being an August waiver claim after the preseason’s conclusion was a fun story. I look forward to seeing what the next chapter looks like. Chicago Sun-Times reporter Patrick Finley has a free agency primer that is worth your time as a reader. Finley underscores major position needs, points out potential fits, and provides a general lay of the land. It will be interesting to see how Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’s influence on the roster building continues to show up. With linebacker Alex Anzalone (whose fit we discussed here) and left tackle Taylor Decker (a player who makes sense when you consider Chicago’s offensive line needs) leaving the Detroit Lions, it wouldn’t surprise me if Bears coaches try to nudge GM Ryan Poles toward reeling in some familiar faces to round out the roster. Hammond highlights needs at safety, along the defensive line, and at linebacker in his piece. I can’t shake the feeling that the Bears will try to target a cornerback early in free agency. With Nahshon Wright expected to land a significant payday elsewhere after a Pro Bowl season in Chicago, there seems to be a starting position open for the taking. That isn’t a sentence I’d type if I felt that this coaching staff had any faith in Tyrique Stevenson. This isn’t to say that I would simply hand him a starting job in 2026. But I’d be open to him starting in Week 1 if he could win a training-camp competition and earn a starting job by beating a draft pick to be named later. The Miami Dolphins have gone from tanking for Tua to thanking Tagovailoa for his contributions with the team over the last six seasons:

Thanks for the memories, @Tua ? pic.twitter.com/qACg7pkrAh

— Miami Dolphins (@MiamiDolphins) March 9, 2026 Now that his release is officially official, Tua Tagovailoa can find a new team in free agency. There are a handful of teams that could make sense to bring Tua in as a reclamation project. It will be interesting to see who steps up to bring him into the fold. Letting Tagovailoa isn’t the only move the Dolphins made on Monday. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is on the move again, this time to the New York Jets.

The Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys made another trade. Unfortunately, it is not Micah Parsons going back to Dallas. Instead, ESPN reports Green Bay is sending Rashan Gary to Texas in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round pick. Gary said his goodbyes on Friday in an Instagram post that was later deleted and blamed on a hacker. Ope! Don’t you hate it when hackers get into your account to post a heartfelt “so long” to the team that drafted you, developed your skills, and helped you become a Pro Bowler? I know I do!
