Nation’s Capital Swim Club’s Blake Madsen has committed to Brigham Young University, joining the Cougar men for the Fall of 2026.
I am incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at BYU. I am grateful for all my coaches, especially coach Pete who got me to this point and for Coach Tamber, and Coach Melissa who believed in me and have given me this opportunity. Madsen hails from Chantilly, Virginia, where he represents Chantilly High School. As a junior at the VHSL State Championships, Madsen finished runner-up in the 100 breaststroke, touching in 55.48. The time marked a more than half-second drop from the prelims, where he swam 56.09, besting his pre-meet best by a tenth of a second. He also finished 6th in the 200 IM, clocking 1:52.47. He led off the state championship-winning 400 free relay in 47.60, ultimately leading his team to a final time of 3:03.34.

In March of 2025, Madsen raced at the NCSA Spring Championships, where he set best times in all three breaststroke distances, clocking 25.99 in the 50 breast, 55.38 in the 100 breast, and 2:02.20 in the 200 breast. His best finish came in the 100 breast, where he finished 11th, as well as a 12th-place effort in the 200 breast.
Madsen also holds some IM skill, boasting a lifetime 200 IM best of 1:52.00. He has also been as fast as 4:42.29 in the 500 free; both of those best times came at the VHSL Northern Region 6D CHampionships in February of 2025.

Based on Madsen’s best times, he would have placed 26th in the 100 breast, 31st in the 200 breast, and 37th in the 200 IM at those championships.
Madsen still sits outside the scoring range but bolsters the BYU breaststroke room, a group that scored 55 points in the 100 breaststroke, the 2nd most in the conference, only trailing Arizona State. They found similar success in the 200 breast, collectively picking up 55 team points, trailing only Cincinnati and Arizona State in the event.
The 3nrd event choice will likely come down to the 200 IM and 500 free. The two fortunately fall on opposite days from his other primary events. The Cougars may look to insert him into the 200 IM, where, unlike the breaststrokes, they only managed to squeak out 19 total points, unlike the 57 they earned in the 500.
Madsen will join the program alongside Colin Eliason, Sam Weaver, Jimmy Beeson, Grayden Barker, and Gavin Willyerd for the Cougars 2026 recruiting class.
