Colorado State will begin spring football practice Sunday morning to kick off a schedule of 15 workouts that will conclude April 15.
This will be the first set of spring practices for new head coach Jim Mora, as the Rams try to rebuild after Jay Norvell was fired midway through the 2025 season.
The Rams will also be entering a new era as a member of the reinvented Pac-12 Conference.
With Norvell leading the team for about half the 2025 season, and then interim coach Tyson Summers taking over, CSU went 2-10 overall and 1-7 in its final year in the Mountain West Conference.
There will be new faces all over the field as CSU added more than 30 players to its roster through the transfer portal.
Here are a few position groups to keep an eye on during the Rams’ spring workouts.
Quarterback
There should be a spirited and competitive battle for who will start at quarterback when the Rams open the 2026 season at home against Wyoming in September.
The two quarterbacks who saw the most time under center for the Rams last season, Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi and Jackson Brousseau, transferred. The only returner who played last fall for CSU is Darius Curry, who started one game for the Rams before being suspended for the season finale for spitting on an opposing player.
Tommy Pholosky also returns, but he redshirted last season.
To fill the void, CSU added transfers Hauss Hejny from Oklahoma State and K’saan Farrar from UConn. They will join incoming freshmen Carter Emmanuel and Darnell Kelly to make up the six-player quarterback room.
Henjy brings some high expectations with him to Fort Collins. He started Oklahoma State’s season opener and completed 5 of 10 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 27 yards and a TD before being injured in the game. He missed the rest of the season.
Prior to transferring to Oklahoma State, he played in four games at TCU.
Farrar appeared in two games for UConn last season before redshirting. He completed 11 of 18 passes for 84 yards while rushing nine times for 30 yards and a touchdown.
Darius Curry will compete for CSU's starting quarterback spot as the only returner for the Rams heading into the 2026 season. (Nathan Wright/Loveland Reporter-Herald)Curry played in five games and passed for 750 yards and five touchdowns for the Rams last season.
Running back
CSU also lost its entire running back room to the transfer portal, including Justin Marshall, Lloyd Avant and Jalen Dupree, who combined to rush for more than 1,200 yards last season.
Seven newcomers are on the Rams’ spring roster looking to fill the void at the position.
Four of them are transfers, with three coming to Fort Collins after playing for Mora at UConn.
Durell Robinson joins the Rams after playing at Auburn last season. CSU is his third college. He played one season at Charlotte and one at UConn before his one year at Auburn.
At Auburn last season, he had three carries for 57 yards and a touchdown but missed several games with an injury. In 2024 at UConn, he had 107 carries for 731 yards and eight touchdowns.
Oliver Lundberg also comes to CSU from UConn, where he was a redshirt freshman last season, rushing for 138 yards on 23 carries with one touchdown. He is a native of Sweden. Mel Brown played two seasons at UConn, rushing 150 times for 935 yards and four touchdowns for the Huskies.
The last UConn running back transfer is Malichi Greaves, who was a true freshman last season and had three carries for 15 yards.
CSU’s other three running backs are all true freshmen and include Cedric Ross from Lubbock, Texas; Damian Moore Jr. from Orlando, Florida; and Amare Gomez from San Diego.
Linebacker
CSU features a 10-player linebacker room bringing together a mix of transfers, freshmen and a couple of returners from last year’s team. The transfer group features several high-profile players who should have an immediate impact.
The four transfer additions include Marc Pretto, who joins CSU from Northern Illinois. He had 29 tackles, two tackles for loss, half a sack and a fumble recovery. Before playing at UNI, he played two seasons at Fordham.
Caleb Otlewski comes to Fort Collins from FCS powerhouse Montana. As a redshirt sophomore last season, he led Montana in tackles with 79. He also recorded 9.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and two interceptions.
Oumar Diomande joins the CSU program from UConn where he was a redshirt sophomore last season. He finished second on the team with 116 tackles last fall and had eight tackles for loss, five sacks and five quarterback hurries.
The last transfer linebacker is Antarron Turner, who comes to Fort Collins from Wisconsin. He didn’t play in any games for the Badgers, but prior to his season at Wisconsin, he played three at FCS Western Carolina where he had 61 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks in 2024.
Special Teams
The Rams lost both their starting kicker and punter from last year’s team to the transfer portal but added transfers at both positions.
Punter Cavan Craig comes to Fort Collins after playing last season at Wofford. He averaged 41.8 yards per punt with 15 inside the 20-yard line and three touchbacks. He had seven punts for more than 50 yards.
Kicker Kali Nguma joins the Rams after playing at North Texas last season. He made 12 of 13 field goal attempts with a long of 46. He also made a school-record 70 extra point attempts. In his career, he has made 125 PATs and is 23-for-29 on field goals.
