Grading the Blackhawks’ 2026 NHL Trade Deadline ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The 2026 NHL trade Deadline has come and gone, and… the final hours leading up to the cutoff were pretty boring and quiet for the Blackhawks. After trading their captain to Minnesota around the time the morning skate was supposed to take place, the rest of the day was filled with a minor, AHL depth move with the Rangers while other teams scrambling to fill their needs.

Here’s my breakdown of how Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson did at before this year’s trade deadline.

ADDED

2027 first-round pick (from Edmonton) 2028 second-round pick (from Edmonton) forward Andrew Mangiapane defenseman Derrick Pouliot (AHL)

Getting first- and second-round picks for Dickinson and Murphy, respectively, is vey good value for 2-4 months of those veterans. They’re both rentals headed to unrestricted free agency. Those picks will be valuable pieces for the Blackhawks, either adding to the pipeline in the coming years or as trade assets if/when the right opportunity presents itself.

The two players acquired before the deadline are pure depth for the organization. Rockford needs depth on the blue line next year and got it in Pouliot. Mangiapane has some game and has scored in the NHL in previous stops along the way, Edmonton was just a bad fit. His cap hit will help the Blackhawks reach the floor and will put pressure on guys like André Burakovsky to earn minutes next year.

DEPARTED

Nick Foligno (to MIN) Connor Murphy (to EDM) Jason Dickinson (to EDM) Colton Dach (to EDM) Aidan Thompson (AHL – to NYR)

How many of the names in the departed section would have been an impact player for the Chicago Blackhawks beyond the end of the 2025-26 season? Your answer: likely none.

Foligno was the perfect individual to bridge the captaincy from Jonathan Toews to Connor Bedard. He had a sense of humor but worked his ass off. He was everyone’s big brother and best friend, but said the things that needed to be said when the wheels came off. Foligno is one of the most respected players in the league for many reasons. The Blackhawks doing right by him will matter to other players and agents when considering Chicago as a free agent down the road.

Murphy and Dickinson were terrific players who were good soldiers thru some shitty seasons. They gave more than their bodies could handle many times, doing thankless work defensively on bad offensive teams. They’ll get a chance to show their value in front of a Canadian audience and, hopefully, make a deep run in the playoffs. Good for them.

Dach had the best chances of being here beyond this season, but he was out of the Blackhawks’ rotation now, is going to be a restricted free agent this summer, and would have to (maybe literally) fight for a roster spot with more physical prospects coming into the pro ranks (notably Sacha Boisvert, AJ Spellacy) in training camp if he got another contract in Chicago.

I’ve admittedly been a Thompson fan for a long time. He’s appeared in 44 professional games — all with Rockford — and he’s 11 months older than Dach.
