Our latest News10NBC Scholar Athlete comes from Rush-Henrietta where the boys basketball team, led by Milan Griffiths and his 27 points, punched their ticket to the Blue Cross Arena.
Rush Henrietta-Boys basketball will play Fairport on Saturday with a section five title on the line. But just days ago, getting to this spot felt almost impossible until our latest scholar athlete Melanie Griffiths, took over.
“The score is there,” Griffiths said. “It’s going to get to us. But yeah, overall, just on to the next, we knew what we had to do, we knew the deficit was huge and we had to just chip at it each possession at a time.”
The Royal Comets trailed by 19 with a minute left in the third quarter. Then Milan Griffiths hit a three to cut the lead to 14. And in the fourth he hit another three before three seconds later stealing an inbounds pass, and you guessed it, drilling another three.
“At that moment, my teammates just got me the ball,” Griffiths said. “They realized, I was hitting shots down the stretch. So they got me the ball, and I was able to hit them.”
From trailing by 19 to trailing by three and eventually forcing overtime.
“Heart, heart, determination,” said head coach Calvin Betts. “Resilience to win. Just not to give up.”
Head coach Calvin Betts knows Milan better than most and says this moment shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.
“When he’s playing at a high level the way he did today. We are top team to play. We just play with immense confidence,” Betts said. “Great, great game by Milan.”
So when the fifth quarter came and the Royal Comets trailed by one with 20 seconds to go, the ball once again found Milan
“They stayed consistent to what they were doing,” Betts said. “They actually ran the full set all the way through and we found him wide open for us.”
From a season that looked dead in the water, to a ticket to the title game, and at least one more game from senior Milan Griffiths.
“It means so much to me to have the opportunity to play with these guys, play in front of this coach,” Griffiths said. “I just want to take advantage of the opportunity and have fun with my teammates.”
Scholar athlete Milan and the Comets will play Fairport on Saturday at 1 p.m.
