Six Cubs Players Show Up in ESPN’s Top-100 for 2026 ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Over at ESPN, their baseball experts endeavored to rank the top-100 players in MLB right now, perhaps trying to take a little shine off the MLB Network exercise that did the same (and underrated the Cubs, I might add).

At the top of the list, you don’t find too many surprises, with Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, Bobby Witt Jr., Tarik Skubal, Juan Soto, and Paul Skenes rounding out the first six spots. I think you are just objectively wrong if those aren’t your top six in some order.

For the Cubs, though, they don’t show up until Pete Crow-Armstrong at number 22. Nico Hoerner (properly rated!) is next at 55, then Alex Bregman at 61, Dansby Swanson at 82 (people forget about his value!), Michael Busch at 86, and Seiya Suzuki at 92. I probably would’ve found a way to sneak Cade Horton on there, but if Nolan McLean only squeaks in at number 100, I suppose I can understand if Horton is just on the outside.

If talent were evenly distributed across all 30 Major League Baseball teams, then you’d expect each club to have three-ish players on a top-100 list.

So, then, the 2026 Chicago Cubs having six such players on a list is good! Just two clubs – the Phillies and Dodgers – had more players on the list, with the Red Sox, Mariners, and Braves matching the Cubs. The Pirates had just Skenes, the Brewers had three (William Contreras, Jackson Chourio, and Brice Tourang), and the Reds had four (Elly De La Cruz, Hunter Greene, Andrew Abbott, and Eugenio Suarez).

Of course, we know that impact in baseball is nonlinear, and the top three players are super duper disproportionately more valuable than players 98, 99, and 100, so you do have to keep that in mind when celebrating a list like this.

Oh, also, it’s all entirely made up and doesn’t actually impact anything that happens in 2026, so I suppose you have to keep that part in mind, too.

But it does track overall with the idea that, on paper, the Cubs are the class of the NL Central. Have to prove it on the field, of course.
