Happy with the warmer temperatures, but does the change always have to come with terrible weather?
Edward Cabrera showed off his nasty stuff once again as the Cubs beat the Brewers 4-1. Here’s hoping he can do the same in the regular season several times. Everyone will focus on the nasty changeup, understandably so, but I found it interesting that he’s still splitting his fastball between the four-seamer and the sinker (after, you’ll recall, he’d moved over almost exclusively to the sinker in the second half last year because of an arm-slot tweak, and also the four-seamer was getting blown up). Maybe the Cubs found a way to help him use both effectively? That’d obviously make the changeup and the breaking pitches even more effective. It was just one outing, but the movement was nice and distinct between the four-seamer and the sinker, and that’s what you want. A great read at The Athletic on Cabrera’s pitch mix, which I’ll have to dig into more deeply soon. You do get the sense that the Cubs will want to continue to recalibrate the mix, even as they work to improve the two fastballs, themselves. Interestingly, he’s thrown the four-seamer more this spring than he has since he was a rookie, but I suspect a lot of that is because he and the Cubs are working on it, not because they want it to become his new base. From Craig Counsell: “[The fastball is] his fourth pitch, that’s how you look at it. You just have to think about him differently. It’s hard to think about — ‘Oh, you can’t have your fastball be your fourth pitch.’ But it’s just different with him.” Meanwhile, the changeup will continue to look like someone else’s brutally nasty sinker. — CPBL STATS (Taiwan Dark Lemon) ?? (@GOCPBL) March 5, 2026 Team USA’s exhibition against the Rockies was another blowout win. Alex Bregman homered again, Pete Crow-Armstrong had two hits and stole two bases. The Reds and Pirates got together on a minor trade, with hard-throwing (but mostly unsuccessful) reliever Kyle Nicolas going to the Reds, and bat-first utilityman Tyler Callihan going to the Pirates. Each of Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) and Quinn Priester (wrist) may not be ready to open the season in the Brewers’ rotation, though not so much because of those physical issues, but instead because of the slow and cautious ramp up.
