Free Agents to Monitor, Pats Dump Diggs, Who’s Still Over the Cap? And Other Bears Bullets ...Middle East

Day 45 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Arch Madness begins today. No, I didn’t miss a letter. Arch Madness (not to be confused with March Madness … the original March Madness … or that one Future song that gets ample spins this time of year) is the nickname for the Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball tournament in St. Louis. I broke my attendance streak last year and won’t be attending this season, which makes me think my beloved Salukis will actually go all the way. Because why wouldn’t they take the crown in a year when I can’t feasibly go?

If you were wondering why the New England Patriots popped up as a possible trade partner for the Bears in a potential DJ Moore swap, this helps explain things:

The Patriots informed four-time Pro Bowl WR Stefon Diggs they’re releasing him after the start of the league year next week, per sources. pic.twitter.com/cRKS8pJw9G

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) March 4, 2026 At the risk of beating a dead horse, I am once again declaring that I am not trying to push DJ Moore out the door. But even Bears General Manager Ryan Poles has acknowledged that Moore might be tough to keep around because of how his contract complicates Chicago’s cap situation. In the end, I hope Poles can thread the needle between what is right for Moore and the team. Good luck striking that balance!

If the Bears trade Moore, I’d like to see him on a team that is on the cusp of winning. I imagine that going from getting your first taste of winning after being on perennial losing franchises, only to be dealt to a rebuilding team, would be a gut punch. A player like Moore deserves better. But with that being said, I want Chicago to get the best return if the team actually pulls that lever and trades Moore. Again, this is a tough needle to thread — one that I am glad I don’t have to try my hand at this offseason. This is unavoidable, but I’m sharing for the sake of exposure:

Every year, a new fake NFL insider spawns. pic.twitter.com/mwEs2kQv9G

— Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) March 4, 2026 Maybe it is because I have been in a professional online writing space since 2009, but the faux league insider thing has jumped the shark. Isn’t it time to try something else? Or is it simply too profitable to do that as a bit? In any case, I’m using this as a heads up to be wary of new “insider” accounts that come out of nowhere to all of a sudden break news. NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero has a list of 10 free agents who could unexpectedly break the bank with big contracts this offseason. Players on this list who I think could be on the Bears’ radar (or could be linked to Chicago in free agency) include defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers, cornerback Alontae Taylor, and safety Bryan Cook. If you’ll recall, Chicago was reportedly close to acquiring Taylor ahead of the 2025 NFL Trade Deadline. Perhaps that is a name we should pay close attention to when the “legal tampering” period of free agency begins at 11 a.m. on Monday. “I’m sick, selfishly. I’m sick because I love D-Mo,” St. Brown said, via Pro Football Talk. “One of my favorite teammates. No matter what the situation was, we all knew that he wanted more carries and wanted to play more, he never made it about himself. He was always all about the team, which I know is hard sometimes, especially in his position. He’s an RB1 on 31 other teams. … Selfishly, like I said, I’m upset but also I’m really happy for D-Mo because I know how much he wanted a bigger role in an offense and I think he’s going to have that in Houston.”

ICYMI: The team that eliminated the Bears from the postseason acquired a stud cornerback. Trent McDuffie, a first-team All-Pro in 2023, is going from the Chiefs to the Rams in a trade that ships a nice package of picks from Los Angeles to Kansas City. Seeing the Rams go back into “F Them Picks” mode is a sure sign that the new league year is around the corner. ESPN reports the Minnesota Vikings are planning to release defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. The move, which comes one year after the VIkings spent $350 million in their efforts to build around quarterback J.J. McCarthy, will create $6.5 million in cap space this season. I’m glad the Bears were able to bounce back from that Week 1 loss to the Vikings. Otherwise, I’d still be fuming over having lost to McCarthy in the season-opener on Monday Night Football. The Dallas Cowboys restructured a bunch of contracts in order to get under the cap. Over The Cap’s updated numbers have the Cowboys at $9,786,896 under the cap. As of this posting, the following teams remain OVER the cap: Dolphins ($1.639M), Colts ($4.715M), Packers ($5.072M), Lions ($6.534M), Bears ($7.463M), Texans ($7.973M), Bills ($8.282M), Saints ($11.635M), Jaguars ($16.902M), Browns ($17.193M), and VIkings $46.675M). This was inevitable: A YouTube executive says the platform could put sporting events “behind a subscription.” YouTube has been making a push for NBA, NHL, and MLB media rights in recent years. And we’ve also seen it be a host for NFL games. I’m not wholly opposed to YouTube getting in on the actio, but I’m growing tired of needing a color-coded guide to figure out where, when, and how I can watch my favorite teams.
