He grew up in London and gained popularity in 1958 when he starred in No Time To Die and Idol in Parade. In the early 1960s, he started experimenting with songwriting, releasing a string of hits throughout the decade. Throughout his career, Newley won a Grammy in 1963 for his song "What Kind of Fool Am I?" with Leslie Bricusse, as well as received many Tony nominations and an Oscar nomination for his work on Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory soundtrack.
