Costa Mesa’s baseball team looks like it is on the way to another fine season.
The Mustangs are 5-0 including back-to-wins of 14-0 over Marshall and Kennedy. They have outscored their opponents, 41-6.
Costa Mesa finished 24-7 last season and went 12-0 in the Golden West League. The Mustangs advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 quarterfinals, losing to eventual division champion Glendora, 2-1, in that round.
“We brought back a big group of seniors,” said Jim Kiefer, who is in his 11th season as Costa Mesa’s head coach. “We’ve got a lot of varsity experience on the mound.”
Among the returnees is senior shortstop/pitcher Wylan Rottschafer. He was selected All-CIF for the second year in a row last season when he batted .337 with 16 RBIs and was 5-3 on the mound with a 1.74 ERA. Rottschafer has the closer role this year.
Senior infielder/pitcher Grady Jackson was last season’s Golden West League MVP after driving in 23 runs and posting an 0.84 ERA. Senior third baseman/pitcher Will Morales struck out 28 batters in 28 innings last season.
Costa Mesa senior lefty Felix Tiquia pitched five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in the win over Kennedy on Tuesday. Morales had three RBIs against Kennedy.
Tiquia pitched five scoreless innings in a 3-0 win over Bishop Amat on Feb. 24.
The Mustangs moved to the Empire League this season. It’s a five-team league that includes Fullerton, Katella Laguna Hills and Ocean View.
“It’s a very good group,” Kiefer said. “All good programs.”
Costa Mesa plays Estancia in a nonleague game Thursday at Costa Mesa High. The Mustangs open Empire League play Tuesday at home against Fullerton.
The Mustangs also get to play at Angel Stadium on March 14 against Laguna Beach.
