One Day at a Time debuted on December 16. 1975, and almost instantly catapulted the show’s two teenage stars, Valerie Bertinelli and Mackenzie Phillips, into superstardom. More than 50 years after the CBS sitcom’s premiere, the on-screen sisters are sitting down together for a rare interview and revealing hidden behind-the-scenes jealousy.
Phillips recently appeared on Bertinelli’s ‘Getting Naked’ podcast, giving fans a glimpse of what life was like for the pair back in the show’s heyday. Over the course of their conversation, the former co-stars dig deep into everything from their first meeting to Phillips’ sobriety.

What was their relationship like back in the ‘70s/’80s? Bertinelli revealed to Phillips, “My thing is though, I was so jealous of you. I was so f***ing jealous of you. You had like the perfect body. You were like this gorgeous, tall string bean, and all the clothes fit you perfectly. And my hips kept getting bigger and bigger. And I mean, I look back now, and I’m like, ‘Holy s***, I was 110 pounds. What was I complaining about back then?’ But we just had different body types. Really, it’s that simple. And there’s nothing wrong with that.”
She continued, “And I just hate that people compare themselves to others because I was one of them that did that. Why do you think? Do you think it is just because we were two teenagers together? Because I know you had some issues with me too.”
Like Bertinelli, Phillips also copped to off-screen jealousy, sharing, “I was so jealous of you. Perfect skin. Perfect hair.”
The actress went on to explain, “I remember I constantly had craters on my face and you know, they would put that thick makeup on, and then you could just see bumps covered by really thick makeup…And all I was like, ‘My god, Valerie’s so pretty. Valerie’s so freaking pretty, and she’s got this perfect hair. And it’s thick, and it’s long.”

While Bertinelli wanted her on-screen sister’s rail-thin physique and Phillips longed for her co-star’s lustrous thick hair (but really, who didn’t?), the two women have now made peace with themselves and one another. More than 50 years after she first met Phillips, Bertinelly points out, “It’s so silly. I don’t want to be like someone else. Just be yourself.”
The Norman Lear comedy aired on CBS for nine seasons, from 1975 to 1984. Bertinelli went on to star in Touched by an Angel and Hot in Cleveland, and to host her own Food Network cooking show. She’s also written four memoirs and several cookbooks.
Phillips’ road was rockier. She was fired from One Day at a Time twice for substance abuse-related incidents and, in 1980, suffered a near-fatal overdose. While she did enter a long-term treatment facility in the early ‘90s, Phillips relapsed and was arrested in 2008. She entered treatment again, achieving sobriety in 2010. She now works as a recovery advocate, public speaker, and addiction counselor.
