ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Tuesday marks the first day of school for students in RCSD, Brighton, Churchville-Chili, East Irondequoit, Gates-Chili, Greece, Honeoye Falls-Lima, Pittsford, West Irondequoit, and more. With the return of school comes back-to-school shopping.

According to the National Retail Federation, spending for K-12 students reached an average of more than $860 per student this year. That’s actually down $30 from 2023. Still, at these prices, saving even just a few bucks on school supplies can make a difference for some family budgets.
News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski set out to find school supply deals by comparing prices at Walmart, Target and Staples. He looked at the cost of standard school supplies — a backpack, pencils, folders, crayons, highlighters and a composition notebook.
Prices at Walmart
Tom also looked back at a 2023 News10NBC story to see how prices have changed. In that story, News10NBC’s Deanna Dewberry found a 4-pack of highlighters for $2.47, pocket folders for 15 cents, a box of 24 crayons for a quarter, and a backpack for just $6 — all at Walmart.
Tom visited the local Walmart to check current prices. Crayons stayed the same at 25 cents. The folder went up 10 cents to 25 cents. The 4-pack of highlighters actually decreased in price by 60 cents to $1.87. However, he couldn’t find a backpack in the store for less than $20. He also found a 24-pack of No. 2 pencils for 92 cents and a composition notebook for 38 cents.
Prices at Target
At Target, most prices were slightly higher than Walmart’s. Crayons remained 25 cents at both stores, but Target’s highlighters cost $1.91 — just 4 cents more than Walmart. Target’s folders cost 50 cents compared to Walmart’s 25 cents, and Target’s pencils cost a dollar more — $1.99 compared to 92 cents at Walmart. The biggest difference was the backpacks — Target’s cheapest cost $30, $10 more than Walmart’s.
Prices at Staples
At Staples, prices were much higher than Walmart’s. While folders saw no price difference and crayons cost just 25 cents more, both a pack of pencils and highlighters cost more than double — or even triple — their Walmart equivalent. Backpacks also saw a massive price difference — $30 compared to $20 at Walmart.
