In the wake of trading veteran defenseman Connor Murphy to the Edmonton Oilers on Monday, the Blackhawks have added another young player to their blue line.
The Blackhawks have recalled Ethan Del Mastro from Rockford. Del Mastro, 23, has been playing some of his best hockey of late and can play either side on the blue line. He could be an option to help the Blackhawks’ penalty kill on the right side — if he’s in the lineup.
The “if he’s in the lineup” part is where the intrigue rests with the recall. The Blackhawks still have Kevin Korchinski on the NHL roster, and could have Wyatt Kaiser back as soon as Friday when the Hawks host the bottom-feeding Canucks a few hours after the NHL Trade Deadline.
And, right now, Matt Grzelcyk — who is on a one-year, $1M deal and could also be traded at some point — is the only defenseman on the roster older than 24.
For what it’s worth, the IceHogs also signed left-handed defenseman Brayden Hislop to a PTO on Tuesday.
