YOUNGSTOWN – Gabriel Merced of Newark, New Jersey scored a unanimous decision over Youngstown’s John Davis in the main event of Saturday’s Lights Out Management, 13-bout amateur fight card at St. Mary’s Assumption Social Hall.
Merced capped off a 4-1 night for the five Newark-based fighters that were featured with three winning by unanimous decision, and the other two going 1-1 on split decisions.
The victory at 154 pounds improves Merced to 12-9 in 21 fights while Davis, who represents Golden String Boxing Club, fell to 8-3 overall.
“I felt like I did good. I threw a lot of punches but didn’t execute like I could have,” Davis said after the fight. “I should have run the extra mile and sparred the extra rounds, but I’ll learn from this. I will execute better next time.”
Two of Davis’ stablemates from Golden String Boxing Club were also featured on the card while the eight boxers with local ties finished 5-3 on the night.
Also trained by Golden String’s Sam Calderon and Tom Cordell, Jayden Gonzales scored a split decision over Logan Magic of Ashtabula at 110 pounds while Isaac Johnson came up short, suffering a split decision loss to Caleb River of Buffalo in a 165 pairing.
Magic had to endure a standing eight-count in the third round.
“I fought Logan before and won by third-round stoppage last August,” added Gonzales, who improves to 5-4 overall. “I just tried working on my craft, using body punches but mostly my jab.”
Both Johnson and River seemed to labor in the third round.
“I think we both got pretty tired at the end,” Johnson said. “I should have moved around more instead of trying to brawl with him.”
Kelly Pavlik, former middleweight champion of the world, committed three fighters from his Ghost Boxing Club, the trio posting a 2-1 ledger on the evening.
Levi Collins (1-2) scored a unanimous decision over Abel Burt of Cambridge at 65 pounds while Diamond Chislom was victorious by split decision over Josiah Abdul-Hamid of Newark.
Collins was in attack-mode from the opening bell to the final punch, forcing a standing eight-count of Burt in the second round.
“I am inspired by Mike Tyson because he was always aggressive when he fought,” Collins said. “Kelly told me before the fight to throw straight punches and just keep the pressure on him.”
Chislom came on strong in the third round for his win.
“The game plan was to stick to the jab,” Chislom said. ”Kelly told me to work the stomach but dictate the fight with my jab.”
It was East Cleveland’s Semaj Williams who was able to score a split decision victory over Pavlik’s pupil, Angelo Martino, in a 60 pound match-up.
“He was tough, but I thought I did pretty good overall,” said Martino, who fell to 1-2 overall.
Youngstown’s Bulldog Boxing Club went 2-0 with Mi’Kell Robinson earning a unanimous decision over Kase Worley of Cleveland Heights, forcing a standing eight-count in the second round of his 106 pound battle with Worley while Jaylen Moore was victorious over Devonn Mickler, also of Cleveland Heights, in an 80 pound scrap.
“He was tough, definitely a tough three round fight,” Moore said. “I relied on my hook more than anything tonight.”
In the opening bout of the evening, Messiah Roberts of Cleveland Heights knocked down Benjamin Cadena, Jr. in the third round en route to a unanimous decision at 70 pounds while Toledo’s Anthony Garcia Ornelas forced two standing eight-counts in the first-round for a unanimous decision victory over Gavin Zavala of Cambridge in their 136 pound hook-up.
Rounding out the card, Newark’s Logan Barona scored a split decision over Ramiro Hernandez of Cleveland at 106 pounds, Jhasi Mtume earned his victory by unanimous decision victory over Isaiah Cantu of Toledo at 125 pounds and in the only female battle of the night, it was Alliyah Moore topping Serenity Crowl of Cambridge, also by unanimous decision in their 114 pound scrap.
Mtume and Moore hail from Newark.
