What Tyus Jones brings to table after Denver Nuggets sign him via buyout market ...Middle East

The Denver Nuggets have played almost the entire 2025-26 NBA season without a full roster of players…until now.

According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Nuggets are signing point guard Tyus Jones off the buyout market for the rest of the season.

Jones has struggled to find an NBA fit over the last couple seasons. After playing four seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves and four seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies as one of the premiere backup point guards in the NBA, Jones has bounced around different situations over the last three seasons.

He was a full-time starter for the Washington Wizards for one year, signing a contract to become their new lead ball handler. That only lasted a season though, and over the last two seasons has went from a starter with the Phoenix Suns, to a backup with the Suns, to a backup with the Orlando Magic, to a salary dump trade option to the Charlotte Hornets and then the Dallas Mavericks.

Jones played eight games with the Mavericks before agreeing to terms on a buyout, freeing him up to join a contender. It appears he and the Nuggets have found a match.

On the season, Jones’ per game numbers are uninspiring. In the 56 games he’s played between Orlando and Dallas, Jones is averaging 3.1 points and 2.6 assists in 15.8 minutes per game while shooting just 46.5% from two-point range and 28.1% from three-point range.

The Magic initially added Jones as a veteran backup option to support Jalen Suggs, Anthony Black, and Desmond Bane in the backcourt in case of injury issues. Suggs did sustain an injury, but the minutes with Jones were a significant negative for Orlando despite clearly needing some efficient initiation of offense on a team with Paolo Banchero.

The Mavericks stint didn’t fare any better statistically for Jones, but Dallas is now tanking for draft position and hoping to feature young players. It’s almost assured that Jones wouldn’t have benefited from staying in Dallas any longer than he did.

So, what does that mean for Jones and his fit with the Nuggets? What does he provide?

Well, historically, Jones has been one of the better decision makers in the league. He has the highest assist-to-turnover ratio in NBA history and is joining one of the best ball control teams in the NBA.

The Nuggets, internally, have discussed the possibility of adding another backup point guard for a while. Injury absences could’ve pushed Denver to adding a forward instead; however, there isn’t a great forward option on the market. The Nuggets were reportedly “very” interested in Khris Middleton had he accepted a buyout, but Middleton and the Mavericks didn’t come to terms before the deadline.

So, the Nuggets pivoted to Jones, who will give them another smart ball handler to play in their rotation. I would expect Denver to try and incorporate Jones into what they’re doing sooner rather than later to see what they can learn about his fit and how he helps the team.

Jamal Murray is the starter at point guard, but the backup spot is open. Bruce Brown has filled that role for most of the season but isn’t a traditional facilitator. Jalen Pickett is, but his play (and Denver’s level of trust in that play) has been erratic this year. Jones has been around the block for a decade and should have an understanding of how to set the table for Denver’s wings, forwards, and bigs at various points.

Will he be a factor in the playoffs? Doubtful. It’s rare for any buyout candidate to have a significant impact in a playoff environment after being let go mid-season. The Nuggets’ last buyout addition was Reggie Jackson, who was more of a factor the year after than he was during the actual playoff season. Perhaps the same will ring true with Jones as the Nuggets try to manage both their short term and long term goals.

Whatever the case, it’s better for the Nuggets to carry 15 players into the playoffs rather than 14. There’s always an injury possibility, and having a 10-year veteran point guard known for his decision making is better than not. Is he likely to help Denver’s defensive issues? No. Is it possible that he helps Denver’s bench issues? Absolutely.
