An engine issue forced a United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to New Jersey to return to Los Angeles International Airport shortly after takeoff, where a ground stop was issued and passengers were evacuated on Monday morning, March 2.
United flight 2127 was headed to Newark, New Jersey after taking off from LAX just before 10:15 a.m. on Monday, before turning around and landing back in Los Angeles just over an hour later, according to United Airlines and flight trackers.
The emergency landing prompted the FAA to issued a nationwide ground stop for planes inbound for LAX because, but that order was lifted shortly after noon, officials said
“United flight 2127 safely returned to Los Angeles to address an issue with one of the engines,” United Airlines said in a statement. “Customers deplaned via slides and airstairs and were bused to the terminal. There are no reported injuries at this time. We’re working to get our customers to their final destinations.”
The issue was possibly an engine fire, ABC7 reported. Video from the scene showed passengers exiting the plane using slides, with smoke coming from the aircraft.
The plane is a Boeing 787-9, according to United, and 256 passengers and 12 crew members were on board.
