In 1985, the American quartet band from Phoenix, Arizona, released the guitar-driven song as part of their second studio album, Welcome to the Real World.
Forty years ago today, “Kyrie” became a number one hit in the U.S., making it their second single to reach the charts.
The song continued to achieve further global success after debuting at No. 50 on the U.K. Singles Chart, peaking at No. 3 in Switzerland and reaching No. 5 and No. 6 in Austria and Sweden, respectively.
Members of the American pop-rock band Mr. Mister. He composed the song along with band member and keyboardist Steve George and Page’s cousin John Lang on the lyrics.
“John said he’d had a dream where he remembered singing ‘Kyrie eleison’ as a kid in church,” he told Rock Candy magazine, adding, “So that was his title for the song. I said, ‘No. That will get us pigeonholed as a Christian band, and that's not what we want to do. But John said, ‘Let’s try it anyway.’ And once that happened, it just morphed into whatever it was, and there was no going back. I remember thinking, ‘This is a kiss of death!’ Because people are going to think that we were proselytising. And it wasn’t like that at all.”
Fortunately, the song was a massive hit. Not only did it defy the frontman’s fears but it also became one of their classic hits, with the listeners embracing it far more warmly than he had imagined.
