Newport Harbor girls soccer loses to Roosevelt in CIF-SS Division 1 final ...Middle East

LONG BEACH — The Newport Harbor girls soccer team couldn’t bounce back after allowing an early goal in the CIF-SS Division 1 championship against Roosevelt of Eastvale on Saturday at Veterans Stadium.

Harsha Subramanian scored in the 10th minute for the Mustangs, who then hung on for the remaining 70 minutes for a 1-0 victory over the Sailors.

The Sailors, who were making their first appearance in a Southern Section final, had numerous scoring opportunities and came agonizingly close to scoring several times.

On some chances, if the Sailors could have made one extra pass it could have resulted in a goal.

Other times, it was a matter of an unlucky bounce.

Goalkeeper Giulianna Vargas also made some outstanding saves for the Mustangs (20-4-6).

Cassie Jacoby nearly scored for the Sailors (17-6-4) late in the first half but Vargas made a sprawling save.

Jacoby also leaped to intercept a pass out of the air on a corner kick late in the second half.

“We played really well,” Newport Harbor coach Justin Schroeder said. “I thought we had the best chances of the game. We had the most chances of the game. Just unlucky.”

Roosevelt’s goal came in an unconventional manner.

The Sailors goalkeeper had just received a pass from a teammate and was attempting to control the ball. Subramanian snatched the ball away and got by the keeper to score an easy goal.

“We’ve been good out of the back all year,” Schroeder said. “They just kind of nicked it, so good on them, good on them. (Our keeper) probably didn’t see her, didn’t realize how close she was.”

The fastest player on the field was Newport Harbor’s Mia Knox, who initiated some scoring chances by cutting to the middle of the field with the ball before attempting to make a cross pass to a teammate.

The Sailors also had speed along both sidelines and had several opportunities on cross passes that were either disrupted by the defense or missed their intended target.

Despite the loss, the Sailors still qualified for the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs that begin Tuesday.

“I think this loss definitely (stinks),” Knox said. “But I’m super excited to move on, train hard and we’re just going to have to hope that we make it to the finals.”
