The Imbaba and Kerdasa Prosecution Office issued a decision on Saturday to detain Ahmed A, an agricultural engineer, for four days pending investigation, after affixing an Israeli flag sticker to his car and running over six people while attempting to flee from outraged residents.
The decision came after security services received a report and heard eyewitness accounts on the incident in which the suspect drove his Jeep at a reckless speed, running over six people (including children and women) and damaging several vehicles and the gate of a residential building.
This occurred after residents chased him because he had placed the “Zionist” flag on his car.
Interior Ministry issued a statement regarding a widely circulated video of a jeep displaying an Israeli flag and speeding recklessly in Kerdasa.
The statement read: “Upon investigation, it was found that on February 27, the Kerdasa Police Station in Giza received a report from residents about a collision and injuries.”
The Ministry added: “While the driver of the vehicle seen in the video was present at the location of the incident, a verbal altercation occurred between him and the owner of a shop, who objected to the driver parking his vehicle in front of the shop.”
“Upon witnessing the altercation and the flag displayed on the car, passersby assaulted him. As he attempted to escape, he collided with several citizens and vehicles that happened to be passing through the area, resulting in injuries to six people, who sustained fractures and bruises. They were transported to various hospitals for treatment.”
“The car seen in the video and its driver were apprehended. His family stated that he has suffered from a mental illness for several years and is receiving treatment from several psychiatrists. They provided medical documents and certificates to support this,” the statement explained.
