The Head of the Telecommunications and Mobile Division at the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce (FEDCOC), Mohamed Talaat, confirmed that mobile phones manufactured in Egypt have recently seen price increases.
This is due to the importation of certain components from abroad, he explained.
Speaking during a phone-in with Hya TV channel on Sunday, Talaat added that the rising cost of components—such as RAM and ROM, which account for 20 percent of a mobile phone’s makeup—has driven up prices.
These components are not produced in Egypt but are manufactured by a select group of global companies that control pricing, he noted, a trend coinciding with these companies shifting their focus toward producing larger components linked to artificial intelligence.
Talaat noted that the prices of mobile phone components have been rising since the beginning of the year, with price fluctuations occurring every ten days—trends that inevitably impact the final price of the devices.
He pointed out that Egyptian companies contribute 50 percent to the manufacturing process, while the remaining 50 percent consists of imported components.
Talaat further observed that rising mobile phone prices are a global issue not limited to Egypt, confirming that these price adjustments are driven by the increased cost of components.
