Women’s 100 free #7 seed Gerda Szilagyi, ASU, scratched the event to remain in the 200 backstroke, where she is the 2nd seed. She comes in at 1:53.56, seeded just half-a-second behind Arizona’s Kayman Neal in the event.
Szilagyi has already swum the 200 free (4th — 1:46.75) and the 100 back (5th — 53.33) at this meet, and will be looking to potentially earn an individual NCAA qualification Saturday in the 200 back.
The other 100 free scratch was ASU grad student Adam Chaney. He was originally seeded 5th in the 100 free, but dropped it to focus on his 3rd seed in the 200 back. He is coming off a win in the individual 100 backstroke on Friday and a lifetime best and conference record in the event from the leadoff leg of the medley on Thursday.
Chaney also finished 3rd in the 50 free on Wednesday with a personal best 18.81.
This will be his first time swimming the 200 backstroke at a conference championship meet, as during his first four seasons at the University of Florida, he always opted for the 100 free instead. He had a breakthrough in this event earlier this year, swimming 1:39.59 against USC to drop six seconds from his previous best in the event. He has only swam it once since then, touching in 1:41.46 at the Big 12 West Championships in January.
