Galaxy limiting goals, but not scoring much either ...Middle East

News by : (The Orange County Register) -

The Galaxy envisioned a multi-goal performance in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup series against Sporting San Miguelito.

What transpired was anything but.

The Galaxy turned in an all-possession, no-goal attack, ending in a scoreless draw.

“We couldn’t create a lot of chances, we struggled to break through the lines,” Galaxy defender Maya Yoshida said.

The Galaxy managed to advance to the Round of 16 with a scoreless draw. While the attack is still a work in progress, the Galaxy are off to a better start in keeping the opponent off the scoreboard.

The Galaxy allowed 66 goals last year in MLS play and 67 in 2023, both years where they finished near the bottom of the league.

Although it’s a small sample size, through the first three games, they’ve yielded only two goals and one was via a penalty kick. They’ve also managed just two goals.

“We’ve been rock solid, I think, in the back,” defender John Nelson said. “Not giving chances to the other team. Last year, we made silly mistakes. It could be goals and the last few games, I think we’ve been a lot better in that.”

Saturday presents another challenge as the Galaxy return to MLS play, hosting Charlotte FC. The Galaxy will be down two center backs with Emiro Garces serving a one-game suspension, following his double yellow-card ejection from Sunday’s draw against New York City FC, and Chris Rindov still sidelined with an ankle injury.

Jakob Glesnes and Yoshida went the full 90 minutes Wednesday at the center back positions.

“One of the things that we focus on the most is if we have the ball, then they don’t,” goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski said. “So if we can control the game, and obviously, I know last game against New York City, we were down a man for the last 25 minutes and I think it shows how sturdy we are, strong and steady in the back. I think it’s just having a consistent message across, that no matter who’s playing.

“I think we’ve really worked on that in this preseason. That’s something that we had to improve from last year and I think that so far we’ve done a decent job.”

Saturday’s game is the last of a stretch of four games in 10 days for the Galaxy to start the season.

Thommy getting close to debut

Free-agent signing Erik Thommy will be available to make his Galaxy debut Saturday. Thommy signed a guaranteed contract through June 2027 in the offseason.

He spent the past three-plus years with Sporting Kansas City.

“He’s a mobile player, he’s a guy who can play on the wing, can play as the 10, but he likes to move through those higher pockets and he’s active,” Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. “He’s busy and finding those gaps in pockets. He can move with the ball, which is a nice add … somebody who can pick up the ball and drive into spaces and play it off, plus he’s got good vision and a great shot.”

Thommy was sidelined with “knee irritation.”

The Galaxy did get Elijah Wynder back on the field Wednesday against Sporting San Miguelito after missing the first two games with a leg injury.

Ramirez finds a new home

The Galaxy waived Christian Ramirez and bought out his contract last week. On Friday, he was claimed off waivers by Austin FC.
