The Tuscaloosa City Council declared February 2026 American Heart Month and approved the demolition of three properties on Tuesday.
“We ask all residents to join us in raising awareness about heart disease prevention and participate in heart healthy activities, support ongoing research and education efforts, and commit to making heart healthy choices for themselves and their families,” said Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox.
Hailey Adams, Miss University of Alabama 2026, said she suggested the declaration because of how important heart health is to her. “Ensuring that my family and friends live a heart-healthy lifestyle is so important that I want to continue to promote it,” Adams said.
Though it is unclear if American Heart Month will be an annual event for Tuscaloosa, Adams said she hopes it will be on the docket for February with the Tuscaloosa City Council.
The council also approved the demolition of a house on 3006 27th St, which has 47 housing code violations. The owner of the property did not attend the meeting to plead their case.
The properties on 3233 Beck Street and 3235 Moody Street were also ordered to be demolished. Each property, owned by the same person, had 46 housing code violations. The owner was not present at the meeting.
