A 37-year-old woman was arrested Thursday in relation to a hit and run crash that left a teenager in critical condition in Chicago, authorities said.

Around 7:41 a.m. on Wednesday, a 16-year-old riding a motorized scooter on the 3900 block of West 68th Street in Chicago’s Marquette Park neighborhood was struck by a driver who later fled the scene, authorities said.

The teenager was critically injured in the crash and taken to a local hospital by authorities.

Hours after the crash, Chicago police released images of the vehicle suspected to have been involved in the crash, a black 2018 GMC Arcadia SUV with an Illinois license plate “AV51401.”

Police announced Thursday that 37-year-old Maria Gonzalez of Chicago was arrested and charged in relation to the crash.

She is facing one charge of failure to report a crash with injuries.

Surveillance video of the crash shows the teen ride out of an alley on the scooter and into the street before being almost immediately struck by Gonzalez’s SUV.

Though it is not clear how fast Gonzalez was driving at the time of the crash, neighbors told NBC Chicago speeding is a constant issue on the block where the crash occurred.

“There’s always cars speeding down this block,” one neighbor said. “I have kids and they are always running across the street.”

Another neighbor said there is a school in the area and kids are often “running up and down” the block.

Neighbors said changes “absolutely” need to be made, pointing specifically to the addition of speed bumps as a potential solution.

People “have to be more careful out here it could happen to anybody,” a neighbor said. “It could have been my son.”

NBC Chicago reached out to Alderman Silvana Tabares about possible traffic calming measures but did not immediately receive a response.

Gonzalez will make her first appearance in court on March 5, authorities said.
