The four flashpoints from Hillary Clinton’s Epstein testimony ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

In a closed-door deposition ending after more than six hours, Hillary Clinton said she could not recall ever meeting Jeffrey Epstein, though she acknowledged that Ghislaine Maxwell attended her daughter Chelsea’s wedding in 2010.

She said she encountered Maxwell socially at public events, describing her as merely “an acquaintance.”

Clinton told lawmakers she never flew on Epstein’s private plane, never visited any of his properties, and had no relationship with him.

She added that she was completely confident her husband was unaware of Epstein’s crime, adding: “I think the chronology of the connection that he had with Epstein ended years, several years before anything about Epstein’s criminal activities came to light.”

Her husband’s representatives have said the trips were for philanthropic purposes and have denied any wrongdoing.

The congressional hearing also extended to unrelated topics, including the debunked “Pizzagate” conspiracy and government-held UFO records.

Proceedings paused over social media rule breach

The proceedings were briefly suspended after Republican congresswoman Lauren Boebert shared a photograph from inside the private deposition room with a conservative influencer, who posted it online in breach of committee rules.

Following the incident, Clinton renewed her call that a full video and transcript of the deposition be released to the public, arguing that transparency was essential to restoring trust in the process.

Pizzagate claims

Unrelated to the Epstein criminal case, the conspiracy theory known as “Pizzagate” was discussed.

The claim emerged in 2016 from hacked emails published by WikiLeaks and falsely alleged that Clinton and other Democrats were linked to a child-trafficking ring operating out of a Washington, DC pizza restaurant.

The allegation was repeatedly debunked by law enforcement and news organisations.

Pizzagate later became part of a broader wave of online disinformation during her 2016 presidential race against Donald Trump.

US intelligence agencies subsequently concluded that Russian-linked actors amplified divisive and false narratives throughout that election cycle.

Why UFOs came up

Clinton has previously spoken publicly about her support for increased transparency around government-held UFO records – now formally termed Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs).

Reporting on her deposition indicates the UFO reference emerged amid wide-ranging questioning that was not connected to the Epstein case.

Speaking following her deposition, Clinton said questions became more bizarre and “off subject”.

She said: “It then got, at the end, quite unusual, because I started being asked about UFOs and a series of questions about Pizzagate, one of the most vile, bogus conspiracy theories that was propagated on the internet.”

Bill Clinton set to testify in historic first

The former secretary of state sharply criticised the Republican-led inquiry, characterising parts of it as “political theatre” and a “fishing expedition”.

She said it intended to deflect scrutiny from Trump and his administration’s handling of Epstein-related files.

Her testimony opened two days of depositions, with her husband due to testify on Friday. His proceedings are historic, representing the first time a US president has been compelled to testify before Congress.

Republicans have made him a central focus of the committee’s investigation, while Democrats continue to call for Trump to appear before the panel as well, though Chairman James Comer has said the committee cannot depose a sitting president.

As the political battle over accountability intensifies on Capitol Hill, the Department of Justice maintains that any documents found to have been improperly withheld in its recent Epstein file release will be published consistent with the law.

For Trump, who has repeatedly claimed he was “totally exonerated” by last month’s document disclosure, questions surrounding the completeness of that release and the broader reckoning over Epstein’s crimes remain unresolved.
