It’s not rare for high school coaches to have other jobs. Most teach and coach. Some counsel and coach. A few have administrative roles while coaching.
Of course, there are off-campus coaches, too. Ones that have day jobs and then lead a program during after school hours — another common situation at the prep level.
But Burroughs High girls basketball coach Vicky Oganyan takes it to another level. She not only coaches the girls basketball team, she is also the head coach for the women’s basketball team at LA Mission College.
That’s right. She’s the head basketball coach in high school and college — at the same time.
“I love basketball. I love giving back,” Oganyan said.
Oganyan is coaching her way to history for both schools.
The Burroughs girls basketball team is one victory away from being crowned CIF champions when the team takes on Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the CIF Southern Section Division 5 final at Azusa Pacific University.
After 22 years as a head coach at Burroughs, Oganyan has made history with the Bears (22-10) — win or lose on Saturday.
“It’s the first CIF final in program history,” Oganyan said. “We finally broke through. We lost in six semifinals before this year.”
LA Mission is having a historic season, too.
The Eagles are 15-13 overall and finished 6-6 in conference play, which was good enough to earn a CCCAA SoCal Regional playoff berth. LA Mission will play at Saddleback College at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night in a win-or-go-home tilt.
“It’s exciting. The college started the women’s program last year. I was hired in April and now we’re in the playoffs,” Oganyan said.
On a non-gameday, Oganyan gets to Burroughs in Burbank around 6:30 a.m. and teaches biology until noon. She hops in her car and drives to LA Mission College in Sylmar to commit her afternoon to practice from 2-5 p.m. Then it’s back to Burroughs for practice from 6-8 p.m.
“Depending on the gym schedule, we’ll practice from 7 to 9 p.m.,” she said with a chuckle.
Burroughs will lean on sophomore Isabella Amayakyan, junior Jessica Mena and senior Grace Barton in Saturday’s final. The three lead the team in scoring this season. But the tone-setter is senior guard Elizabeth Amoroso who was just named Daily News Athlete of the Week for her recent performances this postseason, which included a playoff game with nine assists and another with 15 points. She can morph into whatever the team needs.
CRESCENTA VALLEY-SAUGUS D2 MATCHUP
Crescenta Valley (27-4) and Saugus (24-8) will meet in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 girls basketball final at the Toyota Arena in Ontario Friday at 6 p.m.
Crescenta Valley is the Pacific League champion after going 14-0, including 10-0 at home this season. The Falcons have won 22 straight and are led by junior Anik Nortikyan, who is pouring in 21.5 points and getting 11.7 rebounds per game. Fellow junior Kelin Shajanian is the team’s second-leading scorer with 9.2 points per game.
The Falcons’ last loss came on Dec. 13 against King/Drew (66-64) of the LA City Section.
Saugus finished second in the Foothill League behind Valencia, which is in the Division 1 final on Friday night. The Centurions completed a comeback victory over Camarillo in the semifinals after trailing 24-20 at halftime and 36-32 entering the fourth quarter.
But it was the play of Jasmine Garcia, scoring 12 of her 17 points in the final frame, and EvaMarie Rios adding 12 points and 10-rebounds to complete the 48-46 win.
Rachael Correa added 10 points.
According to the CIF Southern Section record book, Crescenta Valley will play in its fourth CIF final in program history and first since 2016 when the Falcons won Division 1A over Mira Costa. Saugus is making its first-ever CIF final appearance.
