Black Sabbath’s eponymous debut album was a hit in both the United Kingdom and the United States, and the group’s label was eager to capitalize on that success. The band teamed up with producer Rodger Bain just four months after their debut’s release and recorded Paranoid entirely between June 16th and 18th in 1970, ultimately releasing it in the UK in September of that same year. The album was released in the US in January of the following year, in 1971.
While Paranoid received little radio play, its chart success allowed Black Sabbath to tour in the United States for the first time in the fall of 1970. Its success also allowed for the release of the second single, “Iron Man,” which went on to be one of the band’s best-known and signature songs.
Critically, the album is recognized for being one of the most heavily influential pieces of heavy rock work. Guitar World called the Paranoid “the definitive choice for guitarists who recognize that rhythm parts are more important than solos.”
