This morning, Kharun was a modest 44.25, but still topped all swimmers in the event to earn the middle lane for tonight’s final. Tonight, it was Kharun in front from start to finish, even touching a near full second faster than his prelims swim at the halfway point (20.24 to 21.15). His next two 25s were slower than this morning in 11.75 and 11.78 (compared to his 11.48 and 11.62 this morning).
Comparing Schooling and Kharun’s championship record times, the former Longhorn had opened faster at 9.25 and had a stronger 3rd 25 in 11.51. Kharun’s advantages on both the 2nd and 4th 25s were significantly faster, marking the noticeable difference.
Record Splits Comparison:
New Big 12 Champs Record (Kharun) Former Big 12 Record (Schooling) 25 9.38 9.25 50 10.86 (20.24) 11.20 (20.45) 75 11.75 (31.99) 11.51 (31.96) 100 11.78 (43.77) 12.10 (44.06)That time for Kharun still sits well off of his season and career best from the CSCAA Dual Meet Challenge in November of 43.38, a time that puts him 2nd in the NCAA this season, only behind Josh Liendo of Florida in 43.06.
The Sun Devils picked up 132 points in the championship finals alone, with Filip Senc-Samardzic finishing 3rd (44.95), Jordan Tiffany touching just behind in 4th (45.61), and Tommy Palmer (45.84) and Tolu Young (46.24) placing 6th and 7th, respectively.
