In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” “Mids” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, “Mid” to swimmers in the B final and “Down” to swimmers in the C final.

Arizona, Houston and Cincinnati also return a double digit number of finalists, with Cincinnati advancing an impressive four A-finalist tonight. As such Cincinnati is projected to jump up the standings, as they are slated to collect the third most points in the pool. Note, diving is not included in these projections, so things likely will change.
Day 3 Ups/Mids/Downs — Men
Team All (Projected Points) 100 Fly (Projected Points) 400 IM (Projected Points) 200 Free (Projected Points) 400 Medley Relay Rank (Projected Points) ASU 10/3/1 (383) 5/0/0 (132) 1/2/1 (56) 4/1/0 (131) 1st – (64) Utah 5/8/4 (316.5) 1/3/1 (73) 3/2/0 (104) 1/3/3 (87.5) 4th – (52) Arizona 5/5/2 (266.5) 1/3/1 (77) 1/0/1 (34) 3/2/0 (87.5) 2nd – (56) TCU 2/1/2 (127) 1/1/0 (33) 1/0/1 (34) 0/0/1 (6) 3rd – (54) BYU 1/3/8 (165) 0/1/3 (31) 1/1/3 (65) 0/1/2 (19) 5th – (50) Cincinnati 1/1/3 (90) 0/0/1 (4) 1/0/1 (26) 0/1/1 (14) 7th – (46) West Virginia 0/3/4 (108) 0/0/2 (12) 0/3/1 (43) 0/0/1 (5) 6th – (48)Despite an off 400 IM, ASU is still projected to easily out pace the competition as they attempt to earn their 2nd Big 12 Championships title. The Sun Devils advanced 10 swimmers into A-finals, half of whom are in the 100 fly, which is projected to give them a whopping 132 points. Picking up the momentum right where they left it last night, Utah actually advanced more swimmers into finals tonight that ASU, 17 vs 14, but with only five A-finalists, they are projected to be outscored 316.5 to 383. That said, Utah will look to expand their current 1 point lead over Arizona, as the Utes are likely to score 50 more points than the Wildcats, with diving adding or subtracting to that difference.
