How Davis Webb’s role as playcaller could benefit Denver Broncos offense ...Middle East

After being named the official playcaller for the Denver Broncos offense this upcoming season, Davis Webb and his unique perspective inside of Sean Payton’s offense could help the unit be even better in 2026.

How Davis Webb’s role as playcaller could benefit Denver Broncos

Playcalling was Sean Payton’s baby, but now it’s Davis Webb’s responsibility as the Broncos head into Bo Nix’s third season under center as the franchise quarterback. Webb’s been with Nix since the beginning of the quarterback’s NFL career, and there’s a chance that relationship could help propel the Broncos offense forward.

Let’s take a look at how Webb’s role as playcaller could benefit the offensive side of the ball.

Webb’s expectation is to get playcalls in quicker

There were a handful of instances last season when the Broncos offense struggled to get the playcall and personnel in, in a timely manner, resulting in burning timeouts, quick snaps at the last second, and ultimately frustration.

Nix was visibly frustrated throughout the season when the process took too long and it impacted the Broncos’ rhythm on offense. In the AFC Championship game, there were a few instances where this impacted Jarrett Stidham, including the play prior to Denver failing to convert on fourth down which shifted the tide of that game.

“There are certainly things that we want to be better at,” Payton said. “It’s also being quicker. It’s only if there’s someone you feel is good enough to do that. He’ll have that opportunity, and like I said, having done this before, I can recall how it was. I’m sure there are going to be times where I say, ‘This is what I want to run.’ But there’s trust there. There’s trust with his ability and trust in our relationship.”

For Sean to think, feel, and do this speaks to how he views Webb and his potential.

Better run-pass balance for the Denver Broncos offense

There is no guarantee of this, but in the Broncos Week 2 preseason win against the Arizona Cardinals, Webb had incredible balance as the playcaller.

The Broncos threw the ball 39 total times between two quarterbacks (Stidham and Sam Ehlinger) and ran the ball 32 times, with running backs accounting for of those runs spread out between five rushers.

There were too many instances last season where the Broncos had 15+ passing attempts in the first half and six or fewer rushing attempts, which isn’t a sustainable formula. One thing Payton mentioned on Tuesday in his press conference was that the run game consistency last season wasn’t good enough.

“From my lens, we won a lot of games by one score or less. I’m not naive enough to think those games couldn’t have swung. And you could grab any two or three, but where’s the meat on the bone? The meat on the bone exists with our takeaways. That has to improve. Our run game consistently. Consistency. Our meat on the bone relative to a number of things that we won despite maybe not being as good as others. I think that’s the only way to look at it relative to this team writing its own chapter and getting us to where we want to go, which is obviously a game and a half further than where we went.”

Players who stand to benefit from Webb’s role

Bo Nix is an easy name to throw out in this conversation, but let’s highlight Marvin Mims and Evan Engram. Engram is a former teammate of Webb, and in the one game we saw Denver’s new playcaller draw up plays, he got Engram a catch across the middle of the field that saw him gallup for 40+ yards up the sideline.

Engram played a career low in snaps played and I’d bet heavily that he’s featured more this upcoming season. It took injuries in the playoffs for Denver to truly play Mims for a large number of snaps, and it paid off. He hauled in a clutch touchdown catch from Nix that helped them win against the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional round, and he caught the deepest downfield pass in the AFC Championship game that helped Denver score an early touchdown several plays after.

Mims is more than a gadget guy, and Webb’s thinking, combined with Nix’s skill set at quarterback, should see Marvin put into more positions to have an impact on offense. Leave him at punt returner, but remove him from kick return and let him play a large number of offensive snaps instead of the 10-17 total he would get per game.
