Rumors about Denis Bouanga’s departure from the Los Angeles Football Club can cool it for a while.
The 31-year-old French forward, who had been linked to several clubs during the offseason, including Inter Miami CF and Brazilian power Fluminense, has signed his second contract extension in less than four seasons with LAFC, the club announced Wednesday.
Bouanga remains on a Designated Player deal through 2028, with a club option for the 2029-30 campaign. He earned $3.7 million in guaranteed compensation in 2025, according to the MLS Players Association.
Since joining MLS in the summer of 2022, Bouanga has registered more goals (105) in all competitions than any player in the league, and is the only one to produce three consecutive seasons of 20 or more goals.
Last year, Bouanga tallied a career-high 24 goals within the league, prompting a third straight MLS Best XI and MLS All-Star selection. Terrorizing defenders also made him a finalist for the Landon Donovan MLS MVP for the second time in three years.
“I’m grateful to LAFC for the trust they’ve shown in me,” Bouanga said in a statement. “From the beginning, my family and I have felt at home in Los Angeles. It’s an honor to represent this club and our supporters every time I put on the jersey. I believe in what we are building here, and I’m motivated to keep improving, winning more trophies, and helping this club reach even higher.”
Arriving in Los Angeles in 2022 after three seasons with AS Saint-Etienne in France’s Ligue 1, Bouanga immediately helped the Black & Gold win the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup,
The following season, he went on to earn individual honors, including the MLS Golden Boot, tying Carlos Vela’s single-season mark from 2019 with 38 goals in all competitions to go with 14 assists in 48 appearances.
Last year, in 42 fewer games than Vela, Bouanga’s 94th goal for LAFC topped the Mexican forward as the all-time leading scorer in club history.
A one-man avalanche of stats with 148 goal contributions in 155 appearances for LAFC, Bouanga’s torrid output somehow ramped up last summer with the arrival of Son Heung-min. They combined for 18 straight goals and had hat tricks in three straight games, both MLS records.
Their connection appears to have carried into the new season under head coach Marc Dos Santos, whom Bouanga vouched for prior to his hiring to replace Steve Cherundolo in December.
Coming off a shortened offseason due to World Cup qualifying, Bouanga said he had enough time “to retrieve the necessary energy to get off to a good start for the season.”
Through three matches in 2026, he has four goals, including a second hat trick in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Internationally, Bouanga is a regular starter for the Gabonese national team, earning a well-deserved reputation for balancing long fights to play in Africa with his LAFC duties. Starting 52 of 53 appearances for Gabon, Bouanga has 17 goals, including a hat trick during World Cup qualifying last year.
LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington, who had extended Bouanga through 2027 in the aftermath of the attacker’s first full year with the team, said in a statement that performance matters.
“Denis has delivered at an elite level with historic consistency since the day he arrived,” Thorrington said. “He has helped us win multiple trophies. This new contract reflects that. We’re proud of what he’s accomplished here and are motivated to continue building on that success together.”
