Our Chicago Bulls will look to extend their losing streak to double digits on Tuesday night, as their shameless late-season tank continues with a clash against the rising Charlotte Hornets.
After starting off their season with a dismal 4-14 record, the Hornets have turned things around, going 23-17 since then. The play of rookies Kon Knueppel and Ryan Kalkbrenner has been a big part of that.
Charlotte also recently brought in a familiar face to bolster its postseason chances. Ex-Bulls guard Coby White has been sidelined with a calf injury since arriving in Charlotte almost three weeks ago via trade. The 26-year-old has finally been cleared to make his debut for the Hornets — just in time to play the team that drafted him with the No. 7 pick in 2019.

What To Watch For
That lingering calf injury has cost White all but 29 games this season. When available, he averaged a solid 18.6 points on .438/.346/.805 shooting splits, 4.7 dimes and 3.7 boards for the Bulls. It will be interesting to see how Hornets head coach Charles Lee utilizes White. Presumably, he’ll come off the bench to begin his Charlotte tenure. But will the North Carolina native, a free agent this summer, eventually assume a starting role? Or will his defensive deficiencies prove too frustrating? White’s presence might directly ding the minutes of promising rookie bench shooting guard Sion James. The No. 33 pick in last year’s draft, James has been averaging 23.9 minutes a night. While his shooting numbers have been paltry (he’s averaging 5.6 points on a .376/.363/.838 slash line), Lee clearly appreciates his motor and athletic upside. Obviously, the big question mark down the season’s home stretch (well, outside of ownership and management) has been Bulls head coach Billy Donovan. The Hall of Famer has come under fire on this site for his seeming reticence to play young pieces. One of the few players under contract beyond this season, combo guard Rob Dillingham, has been averaging 19.3 minutes a night with Chicago. While that is a career high, rentals like Anfernee Simons and Collin Sexton have been overplayed in his stead for no discernible reason. Jaden Ivey, a restricted free agent this summer under team control, was benched entirely earlier this week — although it was later revealed he’s dealing with lingering knee soreness. Donovan has claimed he wants to prioritize “win-now” pieces, but… a nine-game losing skid would refute they’re helping much anyway. Donovan also doesn’t seem to trust Matas Buzelis late in clutch situations. Again, whether or not playing Buzelis at the ends of close games leads to winning is immaterial right now. The Bulls want to lose as much as possible anyway. Their 2024 lottery pick is now one of the team’s few bright spots after the deadline. He needs these reps in pressure situations. Charlotte, meanwhile, is where the Bulls could only hope to be in a few seasons. Armed with young talent like All-Star point guard LaMelo Ball, Knueppel, and forward Brandon Miller, the Hornets are very much on the ascent in a wide-open Eastern Conference. At 27-31, Charlotte occupies the No. 10 seed in the East. The Hornets are currently 1.5 games clear of the 24-31 Milwaukee Bucks for the conference’s final play-in tournament slot.Injury Report
