Human remains have been found amid the search for a 85-year-old grandfather who was kidnapped in Sydney, Australia.
The remains were found more than one week after Chris Baghsarian was abducted from his home in North Ryde early on February 13. The incident took place when three men broke into his property and forced him into an SUV.
Following the kidnapping, police publicly told the kidnappers several times that they had taken the wrong person. Authorities also urged the kidnappers to release the elderly man, who needed to take his daily medication to live.
Several searches for Baghsarian were conducted each day, with the more recent searches focusing on semi-rural areas on Sydney’s northern outskirts. Police zoned in on the area after a car that was linked to the kidnapping was seen nearby.

Detectives eventually found what was believed to be human remains near a golf club in Pitt Town on the morning of Tuesday, February 24, according to Otago Daily Times.
The township is located about 30 minutes from Dural, which is where investigators located the kidnappers’ makeshift stronghold in a vacant house on Friday, February 20.
While the remains have not yet been confirmed to be Baghsarian, “we suspect those remains to be Mr. Baghsarian,” Detective Acting Superintendent Andrew Marks said, per 7NEWS. “There will be a formal process to try and identify those remains, there will be a forensic examination of the remains.”
No arrests have been made over Baghsarian’s kidnapping and no suspects have been publicly named.
“We’re all outraged this would happen to an innocent man,” Marks said. “We will continue to investigate to identify those responsible and bring them before the courts.”
The victim was a widower who lived alone for about four years.
“This whole case has not been our normal kind of investigation in relation to kidnapping and a hostage,” Marks told reporters on Monday, February 23, per the outlet.
Police have been open about their suspicions that the kidnappers took the wrong victim.

“Early inquiries established that Chris Baghsarian was not the intended target of the kidnapping and had been taken in a case of mistaken identity,” authorities previously said, per Oxygen.
Police have said they believe the intended target of the kidnapping was likely a man with a criminal past who has ties to a well-known organized crime family or one of his relatives.
Authorities also believe that Baghsarian was held and tortured at the abandoned home in Dural, while videos surfaced that seemingly showed him tied up as he was being assaulted, according to 7News.
On Sunday, February 22, police issued a statement saying that they connected two “suspicious vehicle fires” in Westmead to the case. The incident included a partially destroyed 2022 Toyota Corolla that had the Victorian registration “1UZ2BU.”
Investigators learned that the Corolla was reported stolen on January 13 by a Dural residence, which police confirmed was “linked to the kidnapping.”
