We got some good news from Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill after practice on Monday.
Blashill said defenseman Wyatt Kaiser is expected to start skating in the next few days. That’s a good sign that he won’t be out very far beyond the Blackhawks resuming games on Thursday.
It’s also great news for the organization with the NHL Trade Deadline less than two weeks away. As I previously wrote, Kaiser’s injury should not affect the Blackhawks’ approach to the trade deadline. If he’s able to return sooner than later, the Blackhawks should feel more comfortable moving veteran left-handed defenseman Matt Grzelcyk before the deadline.
At practice on Monday, the defensive pairs the Blackhawks were working were:
Alex Vlasic — Louis CrevierConnor Murphy — Sam RinzelMatt Grzelcyk — Artyom LevshunovKevin Korchinski
You can imagine Kaiser sliding into the spot occupied in those pairs by Murphy when he’s ultimately traded out of Chicago in the coming days. Korchinski and Rinzel spent time together in Rockford and could also skate as a tandem as well.
