A Covelo couple was killed last week when their vehicle left Highway 162 and plunged into the Eel River, the California Highway Patrol reported.
According to the CHP, officers responded around 11:30 a.m. Feb. 17 to a traffic crash on Highway 162 when it was reported that a “vehicle left the roadway, went down an embankment, and entered the Eel River.”
At the time, the CHP reports that “emergency rescue teams searched the water while officers checked the surrounding area. However, unsafe weather, high water levels, and poor water visibility made conditions too dangerous for search teams to continue in the river,” and the CHP explained that search and rescue operations would continue once it was safe to resume them.
The CHP later reported that on Feb. 20 around 12:30 p.m., the CHP reported that “Search and Rescue personnel were able to locate the missing vehicle in the river, near the original crash location, with at least one confirmed occupant still inside.” The CHP noted that the vehicle and the person inside had been recovered, and that the search would “continue for any possible additional occupants from the vehicle.”
The following day around 2 p.m., the CHP reports that “the second occupant from the Feb. 17 crash was located, deceased in the water, approximately five miles downriver.”
The two people killed in the crash were identified by the CHP as driver Yvonne Niesen, 90, and passenger Gary Niesen, 89, both residents of Covelo.
“Although there are no other occupants from the crashed vehicle believed to be unaccounted for, this tragic crash is still under investigation,” the CHP explained in its most recent press relase. “Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Garberville Area office at (707) 932-6100 or the Humboldt Communication Center at (707) 268-2000.”
