Alexis Mac Allister’s first Premier League goal of the season secured a dramatic late win for Liverpool at Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon.
Liverpool secured a smash-and-grab victory against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Sunday thanks to Alexis Mac Allister’s winner deep into added time.
The Reds’ midfielder slammed the ball into the back of the net from close range after finding himself in the right place at the right time in the seventh minute of injury time, only moments after seeing another goal disallowed by VAR.
Mac Allister’s first goal of the season gave Liverpool their fifth win across their last six competitive games, as they kept alive their challenge for a top four finish and ruined Vítor Pereira’s first match in charge of Forest in the Premier League in the most dramatic of circumstances.
The Pereira era at Forest had started well on Thursday night with a sensational 3-0 UEFA Europa League victory in Turkey against Fenerbahçe, and they showed promise in attack throughout this match too.
Their first-half display was again encouraging, with their 12 shots the most any side has managed in the first half of a Premier League game against Liverpool since Stoke City in May 2015 (also 12), with Stoke 5-0 up at half-time that day. The second half was a much more even affair, but once again their problem was converting those chances in Premier League games.
Just 7.1% of league shots attempted by Forest players this season have found the back of the net – the second-worst ratio in the Premier League so far in 2025-26. That was a major factor behind Sean Dyche’s dismissal as manager, after he saw his side attempt an astonishing 35 shots without scoring in a 0-0 draw with bottom club Wolves in front of their own fans in his final match in charge of 11 February.
Since their last Premier League goal versus Leeds United on 6 February, Forest have attempted 56 shots in the Premier League without scoring a goal.
Liverpool were dealt a blow before the match began, as in-form Florian Wirtz, who was originally named in the starting XI, got injured in the warm-up and replaced at the last minute by Curtis Jones.
Without Wirtz’s guile in attacking areas, Liverpool struggled to advance into areas of any danger to Forest in the first half, with just two shots attempted and none finding the target. Even worse, they had just three touches in the opposition box before half time.
The Reds improved early on after the half-time break, with twice as many shots inside the opening nine minutes of the second half (four) as in the entire first period (two). Jones had the best of those four attempts in the 54th minute, but he was denied from only yards out following a clever Mohamed Salah cutback.
Liverpool thought they’d snatched all three points with a freak goal in the 89th minute, but Mac Allister was left disappointed after VAR ruled that the ball cannoned off his elbow from Ola Aina’s attempted clearance.
The Argentinean wasn’t to be denied glory, however, as his 97th-minute close-range strike, following up after Stefan Ortega parried Virgil van Dijk’s header, secured all three points for the Reds.
This late win, coupled with Chelsea’s failure to defeat Burnley at home on Saturday, means that Liverpool now find themselves out of the top four in the Premier League table on goal difference.
Nottingham Forest, at the opposite end of the table, remain two points above the relegation zone following this defeat, and if they are to remain in the top-flight, their new boss will need to find a way to get his players converting their chances in front of goal, and quick.
