The Cubs dropped their second game of the Cactus League on Saturday, remaining winless on the spring. But they’re back at it today against the Giants at 2:05 CT from Scottsdale Stadium. This game will be broadcast on SF Video, but that will require you to have an MLB.TV subscription to tune in. And I don’t think most people have one of those (especially those of us already paying to stream Marquee), which stinks.
Unfortunately, each of the next five games is entirely without a TV broadcast (three without a radio component), and the next game after that (2/28 vs Dodgets) is like today – it has a TV broadcast, but it’s through SportsNet LA, which means you’ll need an MLB.TV sub to actually watch it.
The next game broadcast on Marquee isn’t until Sunday, March 1 (vs White Sox) and Monday, March 2 (vs Reds). Bummer.
In any case, Colin Rea is taking the mound today for the Cubs, making his first appearance of the spring. With five starters (Cade Horton, Matthew Boyd, Edward Cabrera, Jameson Taillon, and Shota Imanaga) plus Justin Steele ahead of Rea in the rotational hierarchy, he’s not a big threat to make the rotation out of camp, but he will likely remain stretched out for most of March juuuuuuust in case. He’ll also be in the bullpen on Opening Day, which is great. It’s easy to forget because he ultimately became a big part of the rotation last season, but Rea kinda dominates when he’s coming out of the pen. Over 16.0 innings of relief last season, Rea posted a 0.56 ERA with a 1.7% walk rate. And he had similar success in small samples in both 2024 (1.68 ERA) and 2023 (2.45 ERA). If the Cubs are able to field a full rotation without him for most of the year, they’ll have gained a valuable reliever they didn’t really get to deploy that way last season. With apologies, I missed this yesterday, but Cubs first base prospect Jonathon Long, whose praises we were just singing, left yesterday’s game with a left elbow strain after this play:Jonathon Long exited today's game with a left elbow strain after this play, per the Cubs. pic.twitter.com/H8av2JXvRa
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) February 21, 2026 Hopefully, the injury isn’t too serious. I think we’re all pretty interested to see if he can make the leap to MLB this year. Plus, Long is supposed to play for Chinese Taipei in the World Baseball Classic. Speaking of Cubs prospects with big seasons ahead of them, Jefferson Rojas got the start yesterday and delivered the most aesthetically pleasing type of hit baseball has to offer:Jefferson Rojas ties it up for the @Cubs ? pic.twitter.com/UthMj07SI8
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) February 21, 2026 Should he be on second base after that throw home? Probably. But we won’t mention that. Statcast had that scorcher at 108.1 MPH off the bat. And Rojas’ groundout a couple of innings later was 106.2 MPH. I am just so excited to see what kind of season he has. Matt Shaw got the start in right field yesterday, taking a pretty circuitous route on this fly ball (but also looking atypically calm and steady in the process):Matt Shaw’s first spring training start in right field. pic.twitter.com/BDOLohOmA8
— Aldo Soto (@AldoSoto21) February 22, 2026 The sun has clearly been a big factor for Cubs outfielders this spring, so I think that was probably just a good play. Shaw also challenged a strike-3 call, which ultimately led to a walk.Matt Shaw challenges his strike 3 call using the ABS system. The challenge was successful and Shaw walked as a result ? pic.twitter.com/T8jN4fcSbe
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) February 21, 2026 I’m still a fan of the ABS in general, but if there are multiple malfunctions like this one, it’s going to get a lot of grief.Uh oh, ABS challenge system malfunctioned? pic.twitter.com/DM02xApyu3
— Aldo Soto (@AldoSoto21) February 21, 2026 MLB is already asking a lot of fans to jump into this fairly significant change to the way baseball is played. Adding friction like this isn’t going to help. Gotta work this stuff out in the spring so it’s not an issue come regular season time.MORE CUBS FROM BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
