Tennessee rallies to upset No. 19 Vanderbilt in Nashville ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

Tennessee took down its ranked, hated in-state rival on the road on Saturday afternoon, as it continues to surge toward March.

The Volunteers rallied from a 4-point halftime hole for a 69-65 victory over No. 19 Vanderbilt, stunning the home crowd at Memorial Gym, which is annually one of the toughest places to win in the SEC and in the country. It was Tennessee‘s 4th straight win and its 8th victory in its past 9 games, and it also kept the Vols in 2nd place in the SEC, 2 games behind first-place Florida.

Tennessee could be all alone in 2nd place by night’s end, with Arkansas and Alabama both playing later Saturday. The Vols guaranteed they would be in 2nd place regardless with a rousing 2nd-half performance that improved them to 20-7 overall and 10-4 in the SEC.

While Tennessee continues to surge, Vandy completed a forgettable week, losing for the 2nd time after a midweek setback at Mizzou. The Commodores fell to 21-6 overall and 8-6 in the SEC with only 2 weeks left in the regular season to turn things in the other direction.

In a defensive struggle between the 2 rivals, Ja’Kobi Gillespie led the Vols with 17 points in 36 tough minutes, adding 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Nate Ament was the only other Tennessee player to score in double figures, chipping in 13 points, although he shot just 3 of 13 from the field. But Ament made all 6 of his free throw attempts and added 9 crucial rebounds, including 3 on the offensive glass in 35 minutes.

Ament’s board work was part of a 39-30 advantage that the Volunteers held on the glass. Tennessee also took care of the ball, turning it over just 9 times in the comeback victory.

Tyler Tanner led Vanderbilt with 16 points, Devin McGlockton had 11 points, and Jalen Washington pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked 6 shots to go with his 8 points. But that along with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists from Duke Miles off the bench weren’t enough to rescue Vandy from another SEC loss and a stinging one at that against its hated rival at home.

Tennessee will try to keep things rolling on Tuesday night at Mizzou in a 9 p.m. ET tipoff on SEC Network.

Meanwhile, Vanderbilt will try to stop the bleeding back at home on Wednesday night against Georgia in a 7 p.m. ET tipoff on SEC Network.
