CORTINA — Bruce Mouat’s Olympic heartache goes on after Great Britain lost the gold medal match to Canada in dramatic circumstamces.
An arm-wrestle of a final was broken open in the penultimate end by a Canadian triple, leaving the Brits needing a final-end miracle that proved beyond them, beat 9-6 in the end.
As skip of this same rink, Mouat saw his dreams shattered by Sweden four years ago in the final, losing the gold-medal match in an extra end.
But this time it was the Canadians, who had been at the centre of a cheating scandal in the round-robin, breaking British hearts this time and consigning the all-Scottish team to silver for the second Olympics in a row.
Only a few days before the final, it looked as though the British double world champions would not even make the play-offs, their round-robin defeat to Canada , their fourth in five matches, leaving them needing a number of other results to go their way.
But a 9-2 thumping of the USA and consecutive losses for home team Italy allowed Mouat, 31, and co to sneak through as the No 4 seeds.
They then produced their best performance of the tournament in the semi-finals, battling their way past a Swiss team who had won nine games in a row to that point.
Mouat, one of curling’s most inscrutable characters, was visibly emotional after that semi-final win, calling it the “hardest fought win we have ever had”. He had also produced one of the best shots of his career to turn the match on its head in the seventh end, a triple takeout that his team-mates had to convince him he was capable of.
It was an end earlier against Canada but the ship certainly needed its captain to steady it after a loose third end had allowed Jacobs’s rink to take a narrow lead. However, Mouat produced an inch-perfect double takeout to secure a two-shot end and swing the momentum in Britain’s favour.
But there was only ever a shot in it and after trading ends, the ninth proved pivotal. Great Britain called timeout with the Canadians lying three and stones spread across the house. But the conservative freeze shot was not enough to prevent the Canadians taking an 8-6 lead into the final end.
It means Mouat, Britain’s greatest ever male skip, will have to wait another four years to try and claim Olympic gold, the only major medal that is missing from his record.
