IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — Prosecutors say a missing package of drugs was the motive in the murder of a family of four in their Irondequoit home.
The trial began on Thursday in the Aug. 31, 2024 murders on Knapp Avenue. Brothers Luis Soriano and Julio Soriano face multiple charges, including first-degree murder, arson, kidnapping, and burglary. Prosecutors say the brothers killed two children — Evangeline Ubaldo-Moreno, 4, and Sebastian Ubaldo-Moreno, 2 — along with the children’s father, Fraime Ubaldo, 30, and mother, Marangely Moreno-Santiago, 26, in their basement. Prosecutors say the brothers then set the house on fire.
Day one of the trial
Prosecutors allege that the brothers went after the family after a package of drugs, shipped to the Knapp Avenue home, went missing. The prosecution team said Luis Soriano, from Puerto Rico, often went to Irondequoit to visit Ubaldo, his cousin, and spent time at the home for parties and barbecues. They also said Luis Soriano used his cousin’s home as part of a drug operation.
According to prosecutors, two packages of drugs from Puerto Rico were delivered to the home two weeks before the murders. They say the first delivery went according to plan, with Marangely Moreno-Santiago bringing the package inside, then Luis Soriano coming over to take it to his girlfriend’s house on Kelly Street in Rochester. However, four days later, another package was delivered to the house, and it went missing.
Prosecutors say Luis Soriano and the parents tried to look for the package, but Soriano eventually came to believe that Ubaldo stole it, even when Ubaldo tried to convince him that he didn’t. Prosecutors allege that Luis Soriano got his brother to fly from Puerto Rico to Rochester to help with killing the family in retribution.

The two brothers will have one trial with two separate juries. Jury selection for Luis Soriano wrapped up on Wednesday, and jury selection for Julio Soriano finished earlier.

Investigators arrested Julio Soriano a week after the killings. U.S. Marshals say Luis fled to Puerto Rico after the killings, then traveled to the Dominican Republic before he was arrested in June 2025.
