West Ham created good chances but could not take full advantage. Look back on an entertaining clash with the best facts and Opta data in our West Ham vs Bournemouth stats page.
West Ham’s recent Premier League resurgence hit a frustrating obstacle as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Bournemouth on Saturday despite easily creating enough to win.
Nuno Espírito Santo’s men have begun to turn their season around recently and would have gone level with 17th-place Nottingham Forest if they’d beaten the Cherries.
But despite creating a host of chances, they were unable to find a way past Djordje Petrovic in the Bournemouth goal.
West Ham created opportunities worth 2.87 expected goals, the joint-highest xG figure of any team not to score in a Premier League match since Manchester City vs Crystal Palace (2.92) in March 2022.
Ultimately, though, it might end up being a point gained if Forest and Tottenham are unable to beat Liverpool at Arsenal, respectively, on Sunday.
West Ham certainly couldn’t be accused of lacking purpose from the start as they looked to take another step towards safety.
They had four attempts in the first six minutes, twice as many as in any other Premier League game this term, and they went close with two of them.
First Axel Disasi saw a deflected goal-bound header saved brilliantly by Petrovic, before Crysencio Summerville could only direct his effort from Taty Castellanos’ cross at the Bournemouth goalkeeper.
But West Ham struggled to keep up that intensity, and although Bournemouth didn’t exactly become dominant, there was always a suspicion the hosts could be made to regret not taking advantage.
After all, Bournemouth managed just three touches in the opposition’s box in the first half, their fewest in their last 16 games; it was unlikely they’d not improve in the second half.
By the time the hour came around, Bournemouth hadn’t managed a shot or a touch in the box in the second half, though one moment of inspiration in the 63rd minute appeared to inspire a little more confidence.
Rayan took up possession deep inside his own half and embarked on a wonderful solo run that culminated in a stunning strike hitting the top of the left-hand post.
Suddenly, life was breathed into the contest. Bournemouth had more belief, while Castellanos fired just wide with an overhead kick and Callum Wilson forced Petrovic into a vital stop with a header than looked like it had crept in.
Alex Scott then saw a strike that was heading for the bottom-right corner kept out well by Mads Hermansen.
Jarrod Bowen was presented with a chance to win it towards the end of stoppage time, but he blazed over under pressure from Adrien Truffert, as West Ham had to settle for a point.
Whether it feels like a point gained or two dropped will likely depend on Sunday’s results.
