FOLKS. The Chicago Cubs play A BASEBALL GAME today! The Spring Training opener against the White Sox at Sloan Park starts at 2:05pm CT, with Jameson Taillon throwing the first pitches of the year.
Just remember the keys to a successful first Spring Training game: (1) Enjoy the fun of seeing baseball back, and (2) overreact to everything.
You don’t think about Shota Imanaga as an under-the-radar type for 2026, but the way 2025 played out, and then with some other roster excitement outshining him a bit, I think he does fall into that category:Loved Meghan Montemurro's under-the-radar pick for the Cubs this season. — Andy Martínez (@amartinez_11) February 20, 2026 Also, not for nothing, but Imanaga’s fastball (velocity and location) was probably the biggest contributor to his struggles last year, so I hope Craig Counsell is right about this:Counsell told us today in Mesa that Shota Imanaga’s throwing his fastball harder, is mostly a product of his hamstring being healthy. Counsell believes the injury created some bad mechanical issues while the pitcher compensated for the injury.
— Bruce Levine (@MLBBruceLevine) February 19, 2026 Imagine Shota bounces back and these two pitch like aces:Who will be the @Cubs ace in 2026? Two names come to mind for @JimDeshaies ? pic.twitter.com/hi6HN7i43O
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) February 19, 2026 Dansby Swanson has been working to translate how hard he’s hitting the ball into a little more end-result productivity (Cubs.com). For three years running with the Cubs now, Swanson’s xwOBA has DRAMATICALLY outpaced his actual wOBA, so something is just not quite clicking (especially when you consider that it’s not like he’s stopped pulling the ball – he pulls it even more now than he used to). It’s just kinda weird, because this guy had the best hard hit rate and best barrel rate of his career last season, but the overall results were merely a little bit above average. There’s more there if he and the Cubs can figure it out. The vibes are immaculate:As you'd expect, vibes are good at Cubs camp."We look at each other in the face in the locker room and it's pretty obvious what we have in front of us," Nico Hoerner says of the Cubs' talent. "There's a lot of hard work (to come), but it makes it easy to believe, for sure." pic.twitter.com/BFkSru8xEG
— 104.3 The Score (@thescorechicago) February 19, 2026 The Brewers don’t want Pat Murphy going anywhere any time soon:The Brewers have extended manager Pat Murphy for $8.95MM in new money.www.mlbtraderumors.com/2026/02/brew…
— MLB Trade Rumors (@mlbtraderumors.bsky.social) 2026-02-20T06:02:24.652Z Murphy had been heading into the final year of his deal with the Brewers, but now he’s signed through 2028, with a team option for 2029. Half of the league got votes in this thing, but the Chicago Cubs were nowhere to be found (which actually strikes me as correct):Who’s feeling the heat entering 2026? Let’s just say Bryce Harper and the Phillies come to mind.In the last installment of my annual spring preview survey, the voters weighed in on what players, front offices and managers are under the most pressure. www.nytimes.com/athletic/705…
— Jayson Stark (@jaysonst.bsky.social) 2026-02-20T13:16:27.373Z The Cubs of 2026 come with significant expectations, but, for whatever reason, it doesn’t feel like there’s a lot of “pressure” on the front office or on Craig Counsell. Maybe it’s the halo of a strong offseason following a couple playoff series, and I do also think that the “pressure” would come in a big way in 2027 if this year’s team disappoints. The Cubs giant bobblehead event seems to have been a success (with a Luis cameo in there if you look closely enough):what a day, chicago. ? pic.twitter.com/RzyHjyStxg
