ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Nearly six years after the death of Daniel Prude, the City of Rochester is receiving $2 million for the Daniel’s Law Pilot Program.
The City of Rochester has been named as the recipient by the NYS Office of Mental Health fora Health-Led Crisis Response Services Pilot Program.
The funding will continue to support the city’s Person in Crisis Team, which aims to provide safe and compassionate care for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.
“I am proud that Rochester has been selected as a location for the Daniel’s Law Pilot Program,which will advance the goal of creating person-first, health-focused crisis response systemsacross all of New York State,” said Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans.
“This is personal, the death of my brother did not need to happen and our loss, his life, mustmean something. Having the City of Rochester as a location to receive the Daniel’s Law PilotProgram will help in the process of restoration and healing for my family and for the city. Thepilot will create a system that recognizes the humanity of people experiencing mental healthcrises and treat them with care and compassion getting them the help they need,” said JoePrude, Daniel Prude’s brother.
The program will include peer navigators to provide in-person responses, supportingengagement, hope, and coordination with social workers providing follow-up services.
The funding was announced by Assemblymember Harry Bronson and Senator Samra Brouk.
Daniel Prude died in March 2020, days after being restrained by Rochester police officers. The medical examiner ruled Prude’s death a homicide, citing complications from asphyxia, excited delirium, and PCP intoxication.
