With the reopening of 10th Avenue, the 16th Street project enters its final phases, and city staff estimates there won’t be any further large construction projects.
The project was first approved in 2023, with the promise of improving the 16th Street corridor between 7th and 11th avenues. These changes were also intended to improve traffic safety in the area by installing roundabouts at the intersections of 9th and 10th avenues.
The road officially reopened in December 2025, though additional construction at the intersection of 10th Avenue and 16th Street continued and is now complete. According to city communications specialist Kim Kappel, there should be no further traffic impediments, except for single-lane closures to maintain site safety during streetlight and art installations. These closures are expected to be brief and limited to the active installation periods.
Work continues along 16th Street, with workers performing alley improvements, including masonry wall construction and paver installation. This will impact parking behind businesses but not parking along the street, Kappel said.
Additionally, the city has yet to begin the lighting and landscaping work that will serve as the finishing touches for the project. Street lighting is scheduled next, and landscaping will take place this spring, as weather permits, with completion expected by the end of May.
